Unhappy 964 Turbo Respray Help Please

Hi there, many thanks for taking the time to read my question, I have a 964 1994 3.6 Turbo, sometimes known as a 965.
My car needs a total exterior respray (stone chips, faded paint etc) I have had some people tell me that the best place to get the work done is through Porsche (guarentee etc as a bonus) however having spoken to Porsche, they say that their paint is now new paint and not the same as was originally on the car.
Please help, what do you think, any advice greatfully appreciated, Chris

Before respraying get some professional advise on if it could be rejuvinated. Its amazing what can be done. Even the worst chips can be made clsoe to invisible by all but the closest inspection.

FYI Porsche in Hong Kong painted my 3.2 Carrera a few years before I got it. The paint must be 7-8 years old now and its awesome. Really hard, washes clean easily and polishes to look like a brand new paint job. If you are going to get it done there even if not the same paint I am sure it will be a first class job.

Hi Bruce, Many thanks for that, I would not be happy with the paint rejuvinated in Particular as the colour has faded in so many places complete with scratches and there is the famous rust spots by the windscreen, It is great to hear that you are entirely satisfied with having your car resprayed at a Porsche dealership.
I am considering going back to Porsche (despite the fact that the paint finish will be slightly different to the original, although the same coour) I am wary that I could part with some hard earned cash for a specialist and not have a job done perfectly on my rare car.
Also I am trying to keep the car as original as possible.
For example, does anyone know wether, for resale, it is better to have a respray carried out with a Porsche reciept or not?
Once again Bruce thankyou for your reply, I am hoping that others may also help me too, Chris

A respray is a respray and by def. a repair of damage, you will always lose value in such a situation.

That said, a well done repair is going to add value over a less than perfect example.

It's been my experience that you will get a better job from a private specialist rather than a more production oriented place like a dealership.

My car is a 91 turbo and I found it in a guys back yard in FL sitting 4years
the paint looked totally shot. I spent two days wet sanding and buffing with 3m and the car looks new again. I would take it to a private paint shop and see if they can buff it out for ya. When painting you will need to pull the car apart and replace rubber molding the cost just keeps going up. Also if the chips are in the bumpers have them repaint them but try to stay away from sheet metal.

Hi there, That is a good question, thankyou, I have the car in Marbella at the moment, Although I may be driving it back to the Basingstoke in the Uk shortly.
The main question that I have at the moment is, Is it better to have Porsche carry out the work or a Specialist.
Question to every one please, If you were buying a 911 and were told that it had recieved a respray, would you feel better about it if Porsche had carried it out rather than a specialist?
Many thanks Chris

One big concern for me (as a potential buyer) with a respray would be why. I would document the respray process, before, during and afterwards with pictures. This way any future potential buyer could see it was not accident damage. With regards to who does it as long as they are recognized as good it would not bother me if Porsche dealer or outsider. The people from outside your area may not know who is good so in that case the dealer is safer.

You need to find someone that loves to paint and does a good job not half ass. I seen some crapy work from the dealers with dirt, runs and orange peel over spray also the same from private guys. You take a big risk repainting a porsche for a good out come.

I would check out some body shops around your area.I was in the resto business for thirty years.I only used glasurit paint in a booth. This is the same paint that the factory uses.I learned my craft from a gentleman who worked at the ferrari factory,we used to spray the cars and when they came out of the booth there was no sanding or compouding. We could even match the orange peel to the factory orange peel. There are good shops that will do excellent work.It just depends on how much money you are willing to fork over. Also depends on weather the car has a clear coat 55 line or a 22 line no clear coat.Glasurit also makes excellent primers and epoxy coats which I highly recommend.I would ask to see other paint jobs and also notice if the shop is dirty and do they have a good booth. Our shop was hospital clean at all times.Just look at the shop and you will get an idea of what kind of painting they do.I do not recommend 3m or dupont or other brands of paint other then glasurit, its just my preference.captek
