964 alternator wabble

The outer fan belt broke but the inner is fine. I'll change both. The fan wabbles as it turns without the outer beld on. Seems as the shaft may have broke.

My fan belt has also had a wobble due to the saft. I pick it up tomorrow and I'll see what they did to fix it.

The fan's hub does wear. Mine got to the point where it scraped the housing - now my fan blades are about 1/16 in shorter than spec. The part is about $150 and takes some special tools (fan puller and a nickel to protect the 12 point socket). I was surprised how loose the bearings got after 200,000 + miles.

What type of tools. Can it be pressed off and back on. Can it be done on the car or does the alternator need to come off the car to complete this task. Just the bearing or does the flange with the three 10MM bolts need to be replaced also????

You need to loosen the stainless strap to get a better angle on the fan's face, but don't really need to undo the alternator wires.

The 3 bolts go into the flange/bearing assembly (964-106-051-30). A pulley tool that is about 1/4" or 3/8" wide http://www.autozone.com/in_our_stores/loan_a_tool/pullers_universal/jaw_adjustable.htm
will hook into the oval slots - once you break the crap seal, it comes right out. Then (with the bolts standing at least 1/2" proud) use a wood block and a sledge to unseat the hub. The new one presses in easily. When you retighten the 3 bolts or nuts, it will press the fan home on the hub.

I installed mine with the bolts facing rearward, studs with nylock nuts instead of bolt holes. Makes it easier to reinstall the pulley halves.

Should take about 1/2 hour.

I put a couple nickels at the end of the shaft to keep the centerpoint of the puller tool from mangling the 12-point socket. 10-cent solution for a $250 part.

Well I've just installed the new fan flange with the bearing. Now it turns straight but when I give it the gas I hear the fan ping meaning it is just slightly hitting. I took it all back apart and every thing looks fine but it does have noticeable ( the alternator shaft) up and down movement. So I put all the shims in the center of both belt pullies and it doesn't make much noise bit it still is hitting something. The belts are plenty tight so that won't be a problem. And when I screwed the studs in to the new flange I made sure they didn't extend throught the back.
I think I need to install a new alternator to fix the problem. Anyone else had this problem?

I've only had an alternator seize on me, never had one wobble.

Did you tighten the alternator into the housing all the way? That might expailn why you had to shim up your fan (the alt is sitting too far to the front of the car).

I had a similar problem (light ringing of the fan) but it's because I put a 1992 alternator (964-603-156 instead of -155) in a 1990 housing. I solved this by putting a split washer to allow the fan to float on the shaft, rather than a solid shim.

Tighten those bolts so that the alternator sit all the way in the housing.

If it really is the alt bearings, don't drive the thing. The tight belts and gravity will make the whole thing crash into the housing and you will have a finless fan and crap in your drawers.
