964 alternator fan

Hi folks,
My first post and a newbie to working on my 964. Here is my situation:

I noticed hair line crack on my 964 cooling fan, also some wear on the shroud, need to change the fan I know, but it seems that the fan belts are tight when I do my deflection test. could this have been the cause of the cracks in fan blade? any thoughts on what to expect when i replace the cooling fan. thanks

If its too tight its possible it put to much strees on the fan housing. I think your suposed to have
1'' inch of play in the belt but I would have to check the specs to be 100% sure.

Hi, I have just had some engine work done on my 1992 964 and noticed the fan had corrosion on some of the blades.
This had caused the actual blade to swell and it looks to have de laminated. I think its an aluminium alloy.
This had caused it to rub on the fan housing, also alloy.
The only answer seemed to be to get second hand replacement parts. As the alternator/fan blade assembly didn't seem easy to separate once out of the housing( shroud) I ended up trading the complete old unit for the second hand one. That cost me $400 NZ.
Mind you I gave it a really nice paint job while it was out of the car.

Regards

Hi, with some slight wear in the 6 o'clock position on the shroud, any thoughts on whether I should replace this also?
Regards

Simon,

Is your fan powdercoated or painted?

Hi Craig, I painted it, its all in the prep. lots of sanding carepul not to go through the fans original paint. The shroud I cleaned up, then sprayed with alloy primer and topcoat.
cheers

With the wear on the shroud I wouldnt replace it if its only slight. The used replacement I purchased came with its shroud so I replaced the the whole lot. I didnt need to.

You probably got a worn hub. To check it, take the belt off and see if there is play in the axle. I thought mine was good, but I found it had enough play to make the blades scrape the housing. The hub is about $150. Should be good for 10 yrs or so.
