Replacing deck lid shocks (struts)

It is time for me to replace the decklid shocks (hood struts) on my 1995 993. It appears to be easy to disconnect the strut at the top (just a small clip and a pin) but the bottom appears to be impossible to reach. Does anyone know how it is done? I am hoping it is merely a press fit at the bottom. There is absolutely no clearance to get your hands down in the hole. Has anyone done this before and can offer advice or photos? Thanks.
