Questions about 965 (Turbo)

Hi,

I have a line on a '91 Turbo and I don't know much about these cars (I've been looking at 993's). This one appears to be a Euro (waiting on VIN), and I wanted to know the issues with the 964 based turbos, what to watch for, and what the euro vs NA differences are.

Thanks in advance,

Thanks Bill, always a wealth of information.

It's interesting the motor is the same everywhere, do you know of other changes (if any) on the euro model? Did it have better suspension? As well, other than the valve guides what should I be watching out for?

Thanks

My 91 had several broken head studs (due to corrosion).

Jeff,

Did you notice the poor running prior to buying, or any other symptoms>?

Thanks

No, they all used the same Boge struts; turbo, C2, C4 & RSA, only the RoW RS had Bilsteins

as always seals, on the engine and turbo

for the motor, have a compression and leak down done on it. pulse to it's health. ...i'd also pose the question over on the 930 forum. for the most part same motor except 965's have the fully finned cylinders.

I was in the shop for a bad turbo (bolt became jammed in the scavenge pump wheel and sheered the drive so the pump wasn't working). When we did a leak down they found a few cylinders with high loss (>15%). Upon tear down one cylinder had a broken head stud and another a broken ring. There was also evidence of a previously replaced stud. Based on how the motor ran, you would never known there was an issue. No smoking, perfect idle, strong on boost. Ran great...

I did not have a PPI done on purchase. Lesson learned as we would have found the issues. I was lucky however and had purchased a warranty which covered 95% of the rebuild costs....very lucky! As JoeMag mentions...a leak down would be a good idea.
