Installing a new ignition switch on a 964
My old ignition switch has play in it that my a/c and wipers do no work sometimes. Would anybody know how to remove the old ignition switch and install the new one? Thanks!

You can replace the ignition switch by removing your front seat so you can lay in the footwell to gain access to the switch.
![]() First you have to get this box out of your way: ![]() Here's what you'll see when you pull the connector off the back of the switch: ![]() You have to remove the two phillips screws (top and bottom) and pull the switch off. Here's what the lock mechanism will look like with the switch off: ![]()

Thank you so much for the help. The pictures make it lot easier. I would be asking a lot if I would ask for a step-by-step procedure on the seat removal? Thanks again anyway! |

Seat removal is pretty simple. How I do mine is put the seat bottom at it's highest position, slide it all the way forward, undo the 4 6mm(I think) allen head bolts at the back of seat, slide seat back, undo the 2 at the front, lean the seat backwards into the rear seat area, disconnect the 2 harness's to the seat, and lift the seat out, being careful not to smack the sill on the way out. Make sure that you have a good allen head socket to undo the bolts, not a little key, as the bolts are pretty soft, and very easy to strip the heads out. But all in all, a pretty easy job.

Before you go and replace your switch take some WD-40 and spray it in the lock. Then stick your key in the lock, pull it out and wipre it off. Keep doing this until the key is dry. The tumbler mechanism gets dirty and gummed up over the years and this will help it function better.
When putting your seat back in, be careful that you don't cross thread the bolts. It's very easy to do.

Restarting this old thread.
I'm at picture 3 you can say of this thread. I'm trying to remove the connector at the back of the ignition switch. But its real stubborn, afraid to break everything around if I put any more muscle at it than I've allready done. Is it just to pull it back or is it something you have to press in at the same time to get it out of there? I've pulled pretty hard allready, dont wanna destroy the the whole area. |

insert a small screwdriver between the connector and the electrical switch and carefully pry the two apart.

Tnx that helped. Measured cable from ignition to starter and I got continuity there so thats good. So my problem is either ignition or alarm. Any ideas how to test the alarm? Can you go around it some how?
