installing a 911 decklid on to a 964

Will a mid 80's 911 SC decklid interchange directly onto a 964, same bolt holes and everything.

I don't believe so. When I bought an aftermarket fiberglass deck lid, it had two sets of holes for 911 and 964/993. There may be adapters available, though.

I don't think so either. 964 and 993 are same size but require different hinge adapters. I thought earlier 911 were a different size.

The lids are the same size, but the bolt pattern and offset is definitely different. Adapters can be made quite easily, since the offset for the 964 is more narrow. It can be done with a single plate on each side, roughly 2-3" wide, 4" long and maybe a 1/4 inch thick or so, drilling holes for the narrow hinges of the 964 and holes for the early lid. I also believe the adapters can be had at Porsche if you want to spend the money. The RS lid, is pretty much a glorified Carrera lid, so it it not unheard of to have an early lid on a 964.

If you contact John Walker, he might be able to get you a picture of the adapter. He currently has a 964 with a Carrera tail in his shop.

AFIK, there are both aerodynamic and engine cooling reasons for the moveable spoiler of the 964/993. Now if you have an old lid with a tail on it, that makes sense, except for the work of the bolt hole/hinge alignment.

If you search on the main board, you'll see that many have put a 964 lid on an older chassis - it would be the reverse alignment issue.

The RSA and 964 Turbo's both used early 911 deck lids adapted with an adaptor to fit the 964 hinge. The adaptor used by Porsche is shown below, it is the cadmium plated part.

The OEM adapters are only available together with the hinge assembly. I bought the hinges, removed the adapter and then cleaned it with paint remover to reveal the cad plating.

Part number 965.512.019.00 left and 965.512.020.00 right.

The adaptor would be easy to make with a piece of angle metal.

I don't have the RSA wing installed on my car anymore and it is wrapped in storage and hard for me to get to.

The only dimension that is critical is the offset of the bolt centers between the hinge plane and the lid plane. Note that these are oval holes to allow adjustment of the parts so a perfect measure is not critical.

If you can find an RSA or Turbo and take a simple caliper you should be able to get the dimension easily.

The holes should already be drilled into your hinges for that dimension, if not then they can be taken at same time as the offset dimension.

on my '89 C4, i drilled 4 holes and used nutserts. fits fine. you just have to have a nutsert tool.
