What is this seal in the top of my 964 barrel?

This is in a 1992 model 964 engine.
The seal is 4mm wide and looks like graphite. I picked at it in a few places with a sharp pick and it doesn't seem to want to come out so I went to my new gasket kit to see what a new one looks like.
Lo and behold, the new one doesn't look anything like the old one.
It is only 2.5mm wide, about 1.8mm thick, hollow and made of steel.

Where do I go from here?

Yep...that's the graphite ring the factory used. It's two layers. You can see it in my rebuild pics.

Thanks

Thanks Anthony, that thread is a lifesaver. I am sure you have made life easier for lot's of us. You answered my sealing ring question and more!!

The engine I am currently building came to me in pieces so it is a real jigsaw puzzle in some areas where the 964 is different to earlier engines that I'm more familiar with.
Thanks again.

I am being told that the 2.5mm wide steel rings are the correct part which supersedes the original graphite gaskets.

These just don't look right.

Can someone please confirm that they work OK in the wider grooves of a '92 3.6 ?

If I might offer a suggestion. Post your question in the engine rebuild forum. Jim
