Keep Or Upgrade?
All:
I would like to ask for any and all opinions on whether I should keep my '86 Carrera (Targa) or upgrade to a 964 / 993.... Not sure why but I have recently been thinking about selling. I guess I'm interested in learning something new but I didn't know if this was a wise move. Any thoughts? Is "the grass greener" on the 964 / 993 side of things? ** Please share your input for those who have had a 3.2 engine.... I would enjoy reading…. Thanks, L Hunt |

I had an 87 Carrera and just got a 964 last year. The 87 was stock hopped up with a chip and headers and was putting 220hp to the wheels. My 964 is stock and feels much stronger, engine wise. Otherwise, the 964 is definitely more refined, especially in the suspension dept. I'm glad I made the switch and they weigh almost the same. My 87 was 2750lbs and my 964 is 2812 with a 1/2 tank of gas.

Wow, have you done any weight reduction on the 964? That seems pretty light (haven't weighed mine, just going off the quoted curb weights which generally seem to be around 3020 lb or so). I've got a couple carseats in the back, probably a few pounds of cracker crumbs and lost toys under the seats I'd bet.

993 - 930
Sold my 930 to a cat in Finland earlier this year and bought a 70K mile 1997 993.
Miss the 930 raw seat of the pants performance but not the 4 speed and turbo lag. The 993 is a significantly more driver friendly machine and easier to throw around the winding roads in the hills of Tucson. A/C is considerably better etc. Had Steve Weiner at Rennsport re-flash ECU - good performance improvement. 18" wheels with Yokos. 100 octane pump gas available here in Tucson so that counts as another significant factor. Very nice ADULT CAR but with little personality. That said I am seriously considering selling it and returning to older style 994 or Hot Rod 5 speed 911. I imagine I will never find the "perfect" car. EP Slick - Tucson NOBama Territory

Had an 85' Targa which I sold last spring and bought an 93' RSA. Can't even compare. I can actually find gears, the car seems like it's 20 yrs. newer and definately more refined. Although, driving the targa felt like a driving a classic. The sound, smell and simplicity was very cool. For me though, the RSA is great in a different way. It's set-up more for the track, unique and makes me feel like i'm driving a great track car not just a great car on the track. Depending on your needs and taste you can't go wrong........it's a Porsche!
