replacing the connector on the distributor whilst still on engine
The duel distributor on my 964 engine has a damaged connector, and one of the wires has broken off...
![]() I have done a lot of searching and reading, to see if there is a relatively simple way to replace this wire, but not having much luck! I found this write-up on how to replace the belt, which is interesting and helpful, but I was hoping to be able to do this with the distributor still attached to the engine. As you can see in this picture, the wires are located under the cover at the top of the primary shaft. Is there any way to remove this cover from the shaft from above? ![]() The second question is - where can I get a replacement connector and wires from? Thank you in advance for the help ![]()

The piece I needed is in the man's right hand in the lower picture. So that is no help to you. If the orange wire is fully seated in the plastic piece, I think you can do a butt-joint in the orange wire with some ingenuity. In the lower picture, all of the pieces in the left hand come off the shaft which will allow you to do this repair on the bench. Start with the piece between the hand's forefinger and thumb. Remove the snap ring from the top. Stick a screwdriver in thru the hole where the three wires come out and push vertically on the collar next to the shaft. BEFORE YOU START, locate the VERY SMALL piece of metal that fixes the silver piece into place on the shaft -- a really small "key" as it were. It is not visible in the lower picture but you CAN locate the small slot that the "key" goes in. DON'T LOSE THIS PIECE. The silver piece you are removing is very thin. You may bend it a little when prying with the screwdriver. It bends back into shape easily. Once this first piece comes out, you will see the second piece that holds the hall sensor and the three wires. Examine is to see how you will do the repair of the orange wire. Then remove it by removing three small capscrews. Here are pictures of the pieces. The top right piece is the first piece, upside down, showing the collar that you want to push on with the screwdriver to remove it. The small "key" is taped to the lower right piece. Top left is the second piece complete with a plastic cover. Remove the cover and it looks like the lower left -- with the wires well exposed and ready to repair. ![]() Good luck! Brian |

Reading your description, it sounds like I should be able to do this with the distributor still installed in the car, as once I have removed the snap ring, I should be able to pull the required parts up and off the shaft - is this correct?

I have managed to pick up a replacement connector via the "911 Used Parts Classifieds" section here on Pelican. But I am having problems getting the thin silver cover off the shaft - did you manage to do this, and if you did what was the secret?

Yes, just remove the e-clip and then slightly pry up. Mine was stuck on pretty good too, but a small amount of WD-40 on the shaft helped a lot. -Steve |

OK, gave it another go with some WD-40, and got it all out and fixed - thank you Brian for all the good advice
