Another K-40 Question - Sorry... Long

OK, saw thre other thread on a stealth K40 installation - 964 Alarm problem.

This got me to thinking that there may be a K40 detector installed in my recently acquired '90 964 C4 Cab.

I know that it has a Clifford Alarm installed and have yet to explore the intricacies of this. I have the manuals and the remote fob. My plan is to remove it once I have the time.

My car also has a Motorola phone installed. I have removed the gooseneck holder already, but nothing else. There seems to be a box mounted under the P-side seat as evidenced by a couple sheet metal screws protruding through the floor which I discovered when my car was put on a lift. Again, my intention is to remove it entirely and using a metal epoxy, fill the holes in the floor.

The car also has a LoJack transponder on it. This is unelegantly duct taped on top of the oil supply hoses running from the engine to the oil tank in the P-side rear wheelwell.

Under the dash, there is a 3-position switch which corresponds to the Clifford alarm, well documented in the Clifford installation manual.

But, there is also a rotary switch which has a click-on/off position after which seems to be a rheostat of some sort.

When I turn this switch past the 'click' position, I get a flashing 'Check Engine' Light and another 'idiot' light indicators on the Oil Temp/Pressure gauge face. A 'Check Engine' Light alarmed me so much, that I clicked this rotary switch Off and both lights went out. I has thought these were associated with the phone and presumed they were flashing because of my removal of the gooseneck holder and clipping and sealing of the wiring running to it from the central console. There was also an anemic chirping sound associated with the switch being on, which then went to a clicking sound if I turned the rheostat up more than maybe 30%.

A seemingly unrelated issue; when I first got the car a month ago, I noticed condensation in the rear taillights. I removed the taillights with the intention of shooting compressed air through them to evaporate the condensation. When I did this, I found that they had surgical rubber vent tubes in them, leading to the rear cental light panel. But, the rear central light panel had a port for the tubing and I noticed the same port on the rear sheetmetal behind it, but no tubing. As it happened, I had a length of the same type tubing, and so cut a piece to length and installed it. Problem solved, within a day all the condensation disappeared from the lights and they have remained condensate-free.

But, while I had the central rear panel off, I noticed a kind of black plastic module mounted on the sheetmetal between the car and the central rear panel. I had no idea what it was and assumed it was some engine component. I decided to check it out at a later date.

Then I read the post referenced above and it dawned on me that this could be a K-40 stealth syatem, or something similar. It 'chirped' as the K-40 .pdf manual stated and also had the 'clicking' sound referenced in the same manual. The plastic module I noticed behind the central rear light panel could well have been a rear detector.

I decided to take the car out, enage the switch and see what happened. The system starting chirping as before with both the 'Check Engine' and the other indicator flashing. Then the 'Check Engine' indicator went out, but the other indicator stayed lit. As I drove, the other indicator went out too. I wondered if it had been false signalling because I live in an urban area and false signals are not uncommon. I had no radar trap to use to confirm my suspiscions, so when I got home, I decided to check out my owners manual to try and identify the lights on the Oil Temp/Pressure Gauge. To my surprise, neither of these lights is mentioned or pictured in the manual. Is this a gauge from a 993 perhaps, substituted to provide two additional indicators? And are the two lights being used for the radar detector alert rather than their intended function?

I casually checked the front of the car and didn't see any type of radar receiver there, but I want to do a better check.

Has anyone ever heard of such an installation? Is there anyway to positively confirm that this is indeed a K-40 or other such radar detector?

I look forward to any replies and TIA!

Cheers!
