Why is the 993 so Heavy !!??

So Ive been seriously looking into purchasing a 993 2S or 4S. Both are great cars with good performance. But i had a puzzling question about there bloated weight numbers. I was looking through my Total 911 magazine and it says the 993 4S weighs 3353 lbs and the 993 2S weighs 3252 lbs that seems like a lot. Comparing that to a 997 2S which is 3130 lbs. Is this correct and if so why do they weigh so much?

The electric seats are very heavy, perhaps the new cars have CF in them. Also the exhaust on 993 is heavy too. changing seats and exhaust can save allot of weight~
of course the 4s is heavier due to the 4 wheel drive system.

I'd be careful about accepting the weights w/o knowing the source or config of the car in question.

My 993 comes in at 2800 w/ full tank, rollbar, AC etc. These #s come off electronic cornor weight scales

Bill's race prepped 993 is more the exception. The 964's were a little lighter than there 993 counterpart but when you consider the solid build to these cars, weight adds up quickly. the newer cars incorporate a lot of plastic and thinner materials that the older cars did not. Close the door on a 993 and then on a 996 or 997 and you will hear a significantly different sound. The 993 is a solid thud with no rattles the 996 sounds like plastic. Extensive weight was removed in the doors, hood, sound deadening and wherever they could find an alternative lighter material. Even the paint is applied in a few thin layers vs the older 26 stage paint process.

My 964 C2 has some lightening but safety features add the weight back and it comes in at 3050 with full interior.

The Owner's Manual for my 1997 993 lists the following weights:

Carrera..........3064
Targa.............3130
Carrera S.......3086
Carrera 4.......3175
Carrera 4S.....3197
Turbo.............3073

Add 56 more pounds for Tiptronic cars.

There is also a note in the manual that "If additional accessories are installed (air conditioner, etc.)..." This will add to the weight. So the manual apparently lists gross weights for non-U.S. cars (?). If that is the case, then the statement from "Total 911" is probably correct.

Hey thanks for the post guys...and the jokes! Im pretty sure the numbers in the Total 911 magazine are correct. Its a reputable publication. I also have noticed the build quality in the 993 vs the 996. I guess thats the reason for the heavy numbers. Its just strange to see a car smaller with less hp weigh about as much as the 997.

The numbers you need to compare are the factory numbers for the 993 and the 997. These sumbers are more like comparing apples with apples. Each car however as Bill alluded to can be hugly different. Selecting Heated electric seats with HiFi stereo option will quickly rack on the pounds in a 993.

The 997 2S is 3130, the 993 2S is 3086 this is a good comparison.... and accurate (as base, no option models.)

I doubt you would every find a 997 that is at the minimum weight as mentioned in the manuals, the options add weight very quickly.....
