C4 Shifting Problem.

I picked up a 92 C4. It was very well maintained, and it justed turned 200,000 miles. I went in thinking parts car, but its a sweet driver so why not? I would have preferred to sort out the car over time, but my wife got sideswiped by a truck (she was not hurt, but plenty shook up) so now its an unfamiliar daily driver.

We were out driving, and when I stopped, noticed that the cat seemed to be laying low. Sho-nuf the left engine mount was gone. I limped it home and everything felt good. The doner became the recipient. Since the engine is not in the RSA, I swapped them into the C4. After seeing how toasted the left was, I did the right side too.

I supported the engine on a jack, and unbolted the right mount but I could not get enough clearence to get the old ones out. I ended up taking the primary muffler and rear engine tin out to unbolt the Carrier. Although it was a PIA, it probably helped level and square things up after being cock-eyed.

Now it has a shifting problem. Maybe I bent the linkage lowering the engine to get the old mounts out, or maybe it just needs adjustment. If I row through the gears third is harder to find than before, but it still feels OK. The problem happens if you come out of gear and go to neutral. Then the side to side movement take extra effort, like something is binding or rubbing, and it is hard to find a gear.

I did a search and found some good threads on 915 adjustment, but no G-50. I have a couple of 964 manuals but this aint in them. Any sugestions or info on adjustment would be appreciated

There are 2 kinds of linkages in the 964 and truthfully I can't remember when Porsche changed it, the early is basically the same as the 915 the late one has absolutely nothing to adjust. What probably happened was the rod is bent of the bushings are now bad, simple to replace just get underneath.

It doesn't sound serious at all.

Good luck!

Awesome links

Thanks for all the great info

Some bushings probably got shot. I'll have to get under the C4. Hopefully it doesn't crap out on my wife. I wonder if I can rob one off of the 93 C2 (RSA) to get me through?

I can put the C4 on a lift, but I'll have to get under the C2 the old fashioned hard way. Does anyone know if they are the same?

I just did all the bushings and the coupler at the rear. It took me about 4 hours to do everything. Main time wasters was taking all the screws out for all the covers on the bottom. Wear protective glasses to save your eyes from all the crap that accumulates in the floor pans.

I'm getting closer

Trying to make sure I got this straight.

928-116-145-03-M100 is the plastic clutch lever ball cap (bushing/insert). This way is 1/7.5 of the price of buying the 928-424-005-01-M100 Angular Joint Ball Cup. So you would have to press the caps into the the old Angular Joints (Guide Tube assembly) , then press/pop the new joints onto their respective balls.

Still Wondering:
The old ball caps just get pryed out (say with a screw driver)?
Does any one know where I might be able to find suitable monoball joints like the ones shown in the above linked Shifter Guide Tube Bushings Thread?

thanks again

I'm no
t sure if this is what you are looking for but it's what I have in my car and it works great
Golden ros +RS shifter I think it works in 964 but you might double check

here are the parts, top to bottom, modified RS shift lever, long RS fork & bearing plate, platinum rod(same as golden rod but w/ a boot), guide tube using spherical joints on the ends(this part is totally different from stock or RS

these are the parts replaced

here you can see the modified connection, stock uses a ball/socket, the FD/RS uses a spherical joint
