993 factory foam or after collision?
Hi, i am looking at nice 993 to purchase, but in on of the pictures i see strange foam ( in top left of the picture ) in the trunk, anybody has idea if it is original from factory ( owner says so ), or some repair was maid ( carfax is clean, owner agrees to bring car in Porsche certified center for inspection ), any ideas?

Foam or collision
There is another post on a similar subject, but with foam (painted to body color) around the shock towers. I would have a PPI done since this is not painted. Better safe and have it inspected from the bottom also.
They are great cars and lots of fun to drive without the tendency to have the rear swap ends with you. Good luck, Alan |

I do not have any foam like that in my '95 993.

No ripply foam (or is that body seal sealant) on my 993, just smooth body color seam sealant.

Doesn't look normal, although the car appears clean. I would want to see what it looks like under the spare, and perhaps under the foam.

Now in 993 land ...

Seller may not know better, but that's definitely not stock. Also look at the overspray of the same material!
Personally, I would pass, unless the car was seriously under market value. There aren't any good reasons for this foam to be there. Hope this help. Don't fall in love with any one car - there are a lot of them out there - you'll find yours! George |

Welcome to the board Rolsas47! And happ new year!
While not a 993, my 964 has a similar body/frame arrangement in that area you question. No foam. There is a body sealent in that area (used all over the place actually). It is clearly brushed on coursely and is done before the car is painted (it's the same color as the rest of the car). It does not look like foam or concrete block filler caulking such as in the picture you posted. If you do bring it to a CPC for inspection certainly point it out and inquire with them. In your picture there in an area more forward where there appears to be more of the same foam but not as much of it. Also appears to be a lot of pitting (like corrosion) in that area too. Did you ask about this area and what is up with it? Could simply be a bad picture. Also if you look around the body/frame parts of that picture you will see a few different colors. At least in my 964 the color is consistent through out as far as the body/frame goes. Again could simply be the picture but did you enquire about that too? Best of luck and don't be a stranger, do tell us how it works out! |

Not sure if OP is still around, but that sort of filling is not unusual on 993's and not nessesary means repair:

Fascinating. Clearly this second 993 exhibits almost identical morning-after goop application and leaving "areas normally not seen" unpainted with just primer.
Additionally some have not seen either of the above in their 993. Anyone know if 993's have been assembled more than one location? In the link to the rennlist thread Perelet linked to there is reference to the 993 being an initial prototype. Maybe that has something to do with these differences? |

The "S" in the 11th position of the VIN tells you it is made in Stuttgart. I believe all 993s were.

I asked Colin and here is his reply
" it's just spray sealer applied close range from an air gun, sometimes brushed over, sometimes left as sprayed. As on this car, seldom is the front trunk aperture fully painted so the color of the sealer shows through the dusting of the paint base coat. Kind Regards, Colin Belton " Welcome to ninemeister colin@ninemeister.com |

The car was sold next day after i posted thread, so i didn't have a chance to look at it closely. Seller lookes honest person, and told he inspected car in Porsche dealership, everything looked original under the car, original painting and etc.
