964 single fan belt conversion
I have a 1993 964 and I would like to convert it to a single belt system. Can it be done and still have AC? What is required? Does anyone make a kit.
The belt tension lite came on and there was no failure and the belt was not loose. If you convert to a single belt do you still have the belt warning lite?

I converted my 1995 3.6 for my 1974 hotrod to single belt. I don't think you can use a single belt with a/c, but usually when I say you can't, someone posts a link proving that you can. If you decide to go single belt, be very careful removing the fan. It is cast and fragile!

It will look similar to this ![]() You don't need the belt warning as if the belt breaks the alternator light will come on , just like on all previous 911's

The Rothsport kit is good. I installed it on my car while doing other projects this past winter. The reason I installed it is because it cost less than the total to get the correctly sized pulley halves and shims to make up for a previous owner's shenanigans with missing shims, sleeves, and such from the alternator and fan pulley assemblies. This kit is a great value, an easy install, and so far has given me no problems.
Just a hint: When installing it, be very careful not to drop the small nuts, as they will end up in a cranny between the crankshaft pulley and the engine carrier where your magnetic pickup tool cannot reach them, forcing you to partially remove the engine carrier to get them back. This really applies to anything back there, but the nuts that hold the pulley assembly to the Rothsport fan hub are perfectly sized to slide all the way to the bottom. |

I installed the Rothsport kit. (See pics below) Very nice quality. And like Bill said, you can run A/C when you keep the crank pulley. You will lose the belt indicator (have to put a jumper into the connector to keep the light off) and now have to react to the alternator warning light immediately, of course, as it does mean your alternator AND fan are not turning.
