Can't get axle out of cv joint ?

I have taken the clip off and heated the axle/cv area. Hammered it while in a vise. Now I have a bearing puller pressing it so hard I'm afraid I'll mess my cv joint itself up ? It's a perfectly good tight axle with exception of outer cv boot split into. Any tricks on how to get this off for new boot before I destroy my cv ? Thank you. John

It is supposed to be a tight fit on the splines so there will be no slop between accel and decel. I had to heat the CV female spline part and not the shaft to make the hole grow a little bigger when I replaced my CV boots. When you set up the puller, put a flat metal with a hole behind the CV to pull on the CV inner race and not on the outer CV race.

Thanks. I will try heating the spline alone. Unfortunately I've had a puller on the whole cv all nite which I'm afraid has created slop in the joint.

Ok. I have destroyed my cv joint. Ordered 2 new axles. The axle I didn't mess up is badly marred at the bearing. Now I am trying to figure out how to get my bearing out ? My hub is stuck and no axle to use as leverage ? Anyone out there get into this situation ? Thanks. John

Bazar01. You have a great wheel bearing change thread I found from a few years back. You had a picture of a puller you made but I can't tell what you made it with besides the 3/4" all thread and I think a round metal elect box ? Thanks.

Sorry to hear about your damaged axles. They are very expensive.

You have two choices on the tools.
1. Innovative man's bearing extraction/installation tools from the 911 crowd

2. Correct extraction/installation tools,
Bearing Removal/Insertion Tool Bearing Insertion/Removal Tool - $93.00 : ArnnWorx Specialty Tools

I opted for the first and some special bearing puller set that I already have.

I used an 3/4" round electrical box to remove the bearing as deep or deeper than the bearing thickness. If you order the replacement bearings already and have them, measure the OD, ID and thickness and you can figure out what you need.

To remove the hub, you need a slide hammer or a puller.

Here is an install set up to give you an idea of the assembly. Courtesy of hcloes from the 911 crowd.

Thank you for the help !! I'll get to the hardware store as soon as I get some coffee down me. Your not kidding about $ drive shafts. Between that and eccentric bolt and one lower control arm. $1300 added cost !!

Here is a link how the Arnnrowx bearing tool works. Take a look at the assembly and it will give you an idea what the electrical box is for, the all thread length and the thick washers for removal and installation of bearing and hub. From here you can get the equivalent hardware parts you need as shown in the poor man's tool from the hardware store.

Using RBT

Bazar01 you make it sound easy. But I am having a heck of a time getting the new bearing to not go in crooked ? Do you tap it in a bit to get it straight ? I don't want the bearing to damage the inside. I already marked it and had to buff it with some Emory cloth.

Taken from the Arnnworx site.
"It's critical that the bearing be placed square in the bore. What works best for me is to gently tap the edge of the bearing just enough to get it to hold there without falling out. Then I measure at 3 different points around the bearing. These quick depth measurements tell me if/when the bearing is squarely situated. Make small tapping adjustments until it measures square. "
Once I'm satisfied with that, heat up the trailing arm with a propane torch then start turning the hex nut to bring the bearing deeper into the housing. The heatwill make the install easier.
When installing the bearing into the housing, you push on the outer race so you don't put a load on the ball bearings which can indent it and damage the bearing.
Have fun!
