964 C2 Brake Upgrade Options

Hi Gang,

My friend asked me to post this to find out what are the best/typical brake upgrade paths for the 964 C2's.

He's currently doing a turbo body conversion on his car and he's going to fit 18" rims on it. He wants to fit bigger brakes.

What are his options?

I recommended 993TT big reds up front.

What about the rear? Should he move his front callipers and rotors to the rear, or should he get a 964/965 Turbo rear braking system?

Advice/optinions please?

The 964 is sort of hard to deal w/ in this respect. You can use either 993tt/RS front calipers(aka Big Reds) on 322x32 rotors, then you need to do the back too and this is where the problem lies, here you can use either 965 rear calipers on the 965 rotors or 993 calipers on stock 299x24 (951.352.041.91 vented/solid) or 951 rear rotors(951.352.041.91 vented and drilled). The difference is the 965 rotors are 299x28(965.342.041.00 /.042.00 vented/drilled/asymmetric)) and stock and/or 951 rotors are 299x24

You also need to change the p/v out and a 23.8mm m/c is highly recommended.

The issue comes form the large front bias inherent in any of these setups, many but not all also use a dual master setup to get some more rear bias back.

brake bias?

Are there simpler alternatives?

Why?

I have never run out of brakes on the track or on the road in my 964.

I know this thread was dead LONG ago, but i'm also under the 'my 964 needs a brake upgrade' dealeo. I'm installing 993 N/A 4 piston rear calipers on the stock 964 rotors, upgrading the pads and to dot 4 fluid.

Paul at protosport has installed turbo cayenne 6 piston calipers on a custom 355 mm rotor on an sc race car and had great results. Expect $2500 total for fronts.

Paul suggests the brembo 4 piston calipers w/14'' rotors, says i'll never run out of brakes with these, even after i upgrade my current 500 rwhp to 650 rwhp. Expect $3600 for the 4 piston and $4200 for the 6 piston 15'' GT brakes.

What do you guys like from your expirience. Differant pad/rotor/caliper combo's.

No matter how much HP you have physics will only allow you to slow the car down so fast. It is not only governed by the size of the brakes but also by the contact patch of your tire, rubber compounds, air pressures and the downforce generated by any additional tails splitters etc. Driving technique has a tremendous amount to do with it also. If you unsettle the car by improperly applying the brakes at the wrong time whatever you have won't make a difference if your carrying too much speed. But I am sure you already know that.

I guess the big question is what do you need to achieve. Stock 964 brakes work very well. If you are running all this HP it doesn't hurt to have the additional clamping force but how fast do you plan on entering the turns and how competitive are you trying to become?

I have the big reds front and the 993 rears and I have much more brake than I will ever need in a set up C2. Even with 2 drivers running 8 times per day for 3 days there is no sign of fade and that is pushing the brakes hard. Might not be hitting 160 at the Glen but still reaching speeds in the upper 130's and it is not the brakes that need improvement it is how much do I dare push it. The guys in their cup cars using the stock Medium S4 brakes carry some serious speed and have no braking issues diving into the turns very late and running endurance races. So unless you are at this level I think the stock Big reds should be adequate.

Although if you want the biggest and the best for whatever reason trust Paul, he knows what he is talking about, I have seen his work on the Cayenne brakes and it is quite impressive (hell everything Paul or John does is impressive) although I don't recall but I thought he said you need 18 Inch wheels min or possibly 19 to use these.

Good Luck

What rear caliper does the car have? My '91 had (two piston) calipers on rear, I found a set of '93 (four piston) calipers and they bolted on without a single modification. I looked into a brake bias issue and was thinking that I needed to deal with changing a proportioning valve, but the car handled the change without any issues. Brakes worked fine and the stopping was maybe a little better. What I wanted to accomplish with the Mod was to make all four sets of brake pads the same size. The (two piston) caliper and pads on the rear of my '91 964 were only used for the two years (‘91 & ’92). This limits the availability of after market dust free pads. This mod allowed me to use my favored brand of pads to reduce the weekly cleanup. Before the mod, using my favored pads up front and the OEM pads in the rear, I would get four times the dusting on the rear. After the mod cleanup was a breeze with a little more dusting on the front since 70% of the braking is done by the front brakes.

Sorry for resurrection but I am having the hardest time finding any info on 964 c4 front brake upgrade with stock 993 Carrera calipers. From what I have read so far is that the 993tt/4s big red calipers maybe a little overkill. Also, is it a straight bolt-on upgrade similiar to rear caliper upgrade? Any help would be appreciated thanks.

you can't have searched too hard

but once again

to use 993 front calipers on a 964 w/ 964 struts you need
caliper adapters w/ the correct o/s for 964 rotors, there are also adapters for 993 o/s rotors which are used when 993 struts and rotors are used

928S4 304 x32mm rotors these have the correct o/s and size for the 993 calipers on 964 struts

993 rear calipers on the stock 964 rotors, you can use 968 M030 rear rotors in lieu of the 964 rear rotors, the 968s are drilled the 964 are plain, otherwise they are the same

A 964 C4 comes stock w/ an adequate 23.8mm m/c, a C2 does not and would need to change to a 993 m/c and booster.
