value of non running 993

I am looking for opinions. I drive by a 993 every day that has not moved for years. The owner is not home when I pass the house going to or from work. I have left a number of notes in the mailbox asking that the owner call me to discuss purchasing the car.

It is a 993 body looks to be in good condition. Interior looks in good shape. I have not looked under the car.

As I have not received any calls from the owner, I would like to show I am serious about punchanging this car. I am not worried about getting it running, as I purchased my first Porschedule not running and went to own it for 17 years.

My question is what is good price to offer for a non running 993 that has not been registered since 2009?

Thanks

I don't know that you'll get an answer in this forum. If I were you, I'd post in the Porsche Marketplace Discussion and see if you get a response.

Given how hot the 993 market is right now, suspect short of a blown engine, getting it running into a "flip sale" condition, budget $5k off the market price. Anything below that is a bargain. 993 barn finds are rare.

If the car is parked on the street, would in not need current tags? On private property, then not an issue.

The car is in a yard, off the street. I want to provide a starting number to show I am serious. I am being optimistic thinking that engine will need all fluids, plugs, injectors cleaned/replaced. I need to see the underside and suspension.

It looks like it was parked and walked away from. There is still papers and items left in the car like it was driven home from the office and never returned to.

Jon,

There are way to many things that can be wrong with the car to just put a price on it. I brought a 930 that way that was just sitting outside for a while. While we got it running and I looked under the car and found no oil leaks. Got it for a "Reasonable price" and I got register and transported to my local Indy and it had 6 broken head studs. $13,000 dollar rebuild later Plus the interior and suspension work I was into the car for more than the value of the car. So if the car isn't running and you don't know the history or the local indy that worked on the car I would offer $10,000 for it. My local Indy brought a 97 993 with 65000 miles on it with oil leaks and a broken fork in the trans for under $10,000.

If the owner isn't responding to your notes a blind $10k offer will also be met with silence. If you are serious you need to stop by sometime other than your commute and try to catch them home. An in person conversation is the only way to feel them out.

993s are very hot right now, depending on time of year and what part of the country you are in, an average condition usually sells around $42k...now since sitting outside being exposed to the elements probably need some paint work, after sitting for so long the fuel system will need to be gone through, battery, full tune up service, ect (all thats about -$7k). milage on these cars can be a big factor when it comes to price, if less then 40k miles (+$5k to the price) if over 90k miles (+$5k to the price). Lastly, why has it been sitting so lone, could be an engine failure, gear box failure, maybe the clutch went out, bad DME, or maybe something simple, (+/- $$) So my best guess, not seeing it, or knowing whats wrong with it would be mid $20k range.

recently I have seen really nice 993s bring over $60k, and I have seen a 993 rolling shell (no engine or gearbox) sell for $10k.

Thanks for the advice. I plan on driving by a few time this weekend to see if the owner is home. If they are not, I will try over Thanksgiving weekend.

I can't say what the current owner would do with an unsolicited offer. Don't know how to make them understand that you are serious. It would be a can of worms if you did get the car. With all that said, it looks like the light may be coming up at the end of my legal tunnel on my 95C4 Cab I bought almost seven years ago and still don't have a valid title - the legal system in MO is not set up to help or protect the victims. This car has been taking up space in my garage since August of 2008, LOL, sigh. Anyway it has developed an oil leak. I have a set of gaskets for the upper and lower valve covers, but not inclination to work on the car anymore. Getting old sucks. I will list it on eBay starting at $17500 or so - which is where you might have to start on this car to show you are serious. My car starts right up, two year old battery on a C-Tech charger when I thought my case was going to get settled back then. Too many close but no cigars have dampened my enthusiasm.

John...Do your research and determine your walk-away price. Talk with a shop and have them ready to go on a PPI. Go knock on the door and ask the guy what he would sell the car for. If it's over your walk-away price, then walk away. If it's under your walk-away price, then counter and agree to a price pending a PPI. Be prepared to hear that the cost of getting the car back on the road could be 50% or more than what you paid for the car.

Craig...Getting old does suck, but vertical is better than horizontal, so hang in there.

Yeah, I grateful every night when my alarm goes off at 1.15am that I can get up and turn it off. Keeps the wife happy too, LOL.

But I would echo others statements about a sitting car being a nightmare of possible problems.

Not to thread jack, but some folks have PM'ed me all ready so this is the story of my 993 - Advertine Green/Black/Cashmere. I do not have a legal title so I can't do anything right now.

Back story is I bought the car from a local dealer. They failed to pay off the car at their lender and a week after I got this 993 the bank seized their inventory and shut the dealership down. Since I had the car and it was in a locked garage they could not get it. I eventually (six months or so) bought the car from the bank. They would not perfect the title (filling out the seller section). After that I retained an attorney and I have been stuck in a continuance loop since 2010. I do not get it, but it is what it is.

So the car has been sitting since August 2008. It has ~82300 miles on the clock. The top works fine electrically, I pulled the battery and eventually a new one in 2012 to start the car. It has been hooked up to a C-Tech 3300 charger and starts up with of the key. Freaking amazing!

Anyway the car is really well optioned, top works fine and it has new (now old MPS2 tires). I have the gasket set along with a ton of parts - billet valve covers, a windstop with necessary brackets and screws), Speedline Targa wheels, a new Alpine stereo with changer and 25 foot interconmect, Bird armrest, aluminum gauges (from a Tip) with the required steering wheel harness, RUF strut brace with the nuts ( the bolts need changed out to 24mm to use this brace in a 993), spare rear reflector. shop manuals (Porsche), spare dual distributor with partial set od plug wires and god knows what else) which I would offer to the buyer of the car. I was planning to make the car mine when I bought it,

And that is the backstory. I used to post on Rennlist about my sad tale, but have since moved to a CLK ragtop and may be moving to an E350 droptop later this week. Too many aches and pains these days - too much OT and 18 years on overnights. Ugh. The car is in St Louis MO btw.

Happy holidays to all!

craig,

What a lousy story. So, a title was promised and never delivered? We need a little more info, what's the story on how everything unfolded?

I take it the car hasn't even been driven (which is understandable with a car with no title and, I would assume, uninsured). Hate to see you sell it.

Edit: looks like you filled in the blanks... hard to believe an attorney couldn't help you out.

I would contact your state Senator and/or Assemblyman's office. They have the power to tell your State's DMV to get your title problem rectified.
