1990 C4 will only run on the secondary distributor
Here is what I have done:
New caps and rotors Removed the distributor and checked the drive belt, looks good. I can run the engine on either coil as long as its plugged into the secondary dizzy As soon as a coil wire is plugged into the primary dizzy it struggles to start Diagnostic scan with the Snap On scanner and adapter says bad Hall sensor Here is my issue. The hall sensor can be triggered by any stray electrical in the whole system. If you look at a 964 crooked it will say bad Hall sensor. I know the Hall sensor is in the primary dizzy but it doesn't make sense that the secondary works and the primary doesn't with a bad Hall sensor. Also one key thing is if I have everything plugged in and can get the car to start after 20 minutes and can get it warmed up after another 20 minutes the car will run good until it cools down again then the problem starts all over again. Any suggestions would be very helpful. Please!

Are you sure you installed the distributor correctly, with the rotor pointing to to the notch, and wires to the cap installed correctly?

Yes, I believe it is all installed correctly. If not it would not run good after it warms up. It would not run at all if the mechanicals were wrong.

Could be a bad cap? I had something similar but could not get it running long enough to get the car warmed up. It turned out to be a bad distributor cap out of the box. Not very common but I guess it happens.

Good suggestion, I'll switch the caps and see if it moves with it.

Did you get BERU caps or are they Bosch. Apparently there have been a lot of problems with the Beru caps.

Any Update
Curious if you had any update to share?
I also bought Beru caps for my '90 C2, and could be having a similar issue. Thanks |

Well this project went to the back burner a bit. The new caps were good. Switched back to the old caps and it ran the same. Not a big fan of the 964 ignition system. Not so much the design but the parts are stupid expensive. Plug wires over $400 dollars,
Wish I had more to tell. What would be really nice is if someone would do a hall sensor replacement, if they could find one that would work , and share the info with us. I could not find anyone who has done it. They all replace the distributor. One of these days all get back on it. If I want to drive it I just unplug the primary dizzy and it starts and runs OK.

Porsche Ignition Parts
Yes indeed, those Porsche ignition parts are very pricey...
If my memory serves me correctly, there may be some over on Rennlist that suggest the Hall Sensor code does not always really indicate a bad hall sensor. My car gave that code, and I have a new distributer that was just installed, so I was wondering about the Beru caps. I just did a quick search, and found this link where Adrian suggests the car won't run with a bad hall sensor, others share other input about different problems with the same code "red herring". Running poorly - Hall sensor, diagnostic code - Rennlist Discussion Forums Hum, I know he is very respected and I have his 964 book, but I also know my car would run with it unplugged, it would run, but very poorly. |

Once the DME doesn't recognize the Hall sensor signal or an implausible signal it throws the Hall sensor code. The CEL will not come on for this one as this doesn't negatively affect emissions. With this condition the ignition timing is retarded by 6 degrees to protect the engine from knocking.
When I first installed the 964 I didn't notice anything wrong until I hooked up the CEL and used it to flash out DME codes. The Hall sensor code came up. I traced the issue down to a broken wire near the connector to the sensor. Once that was patched all was well and the engine felt more lively. Ingo
