2004 996 TT.. buy or not to buy?
I am looking at a 2004 996 TT with 35,000 miles on it. It looks in fine shape and test drove it. It drove OK other than front end rattling. I am not that familiar with this car so I am concerned if it is a good buy. Price is below others that are on the market. What things should I look at and be concerned about? There are no records on the car. I have seen Carfaxs and it is clear. Generally is it a good car... not many issues or technical bulletins.. Thanks, Leo.

You need to find a local Porsche independent shop and have them do a PPI (pre-purchase inspection). It will cost you 2 - 300 bucks but that is small change for the correct analysis on the car. Post your location and ask for references from the board here.
Turbo's can be great cars and also expensive to repair. You need to know what you are buying. The Carfax only speaks to crashes and there is more to be concerned about than that. Maybe also post your question on rennlist.com

If you aren't mechanically savvy then a PPI is a good idea. Carfax will only tell you about REPORTED accidents, I have owned multiple cars with prior accident damage that didn't show up on the Carfax. The TT is a very solid car, but like most Porsches can eat you out of house and home if neglected.

As Matt said the TT is robust. At the same time wear parts like shocks & brakes are double the price of the NA cars. Peanuts in the scheme of things but something to consider if the car is indeed negleted.
