AX and class rules for 3.6 backdate

all this talk about 3.6 conversions has got me thinking lately. It will not be deciding factor for me but I am curious if a 3.6 in an earlier 911 will move you to prepared or if you can stay in street prepared in scca. What about PCA class rules?

Don't know PCA but SCCA will put you in Prepared or SM2. Street Prepared only allows 3.2 engines in the 65-89 cars.

Unless you are talking Club Racing, PCA rules change with the Zone, so you will have to check your local rules for classing.

Here in Zone 8, your class is dependent on all the mods made to the car, the engine being just one component. Which class you end up in depends on what you started with and what you changed. With a 3.6 in an early car, you would end up in at least F-Improved if you had no other mods, probably A- or H-Modified with any other changes. Your Zone rules will be different.

In regional SCCA Solo2 competition there are often local classes which are "catch-alls" for cars that don't fit elsewhere. Here in SD, you could run in "SU" (Street Unlimited) as long as you have DOT tires on it.

thanks for the info. I probably won't switch to a 3.6 but sometimes the idea of a car starting on the first turn without carbs spitting, idle hunting and all the other stuff sounds kind of cool. other times I think, I like the peaky cams, nasty, dirty carbs and raw, easy to work on old school engines I"ve got.

Ya, I had to make that decision myself a few months ago. I thought long and hard about the 3.6, but ended up with a carbed 3.4 race motor that became available locally. It's not as driveable as the new DME motors, but it does have the early car character still- high revving, lots of glorious intake noise...

BTW, where do you keep your Alberg yawl when you're in Houston? Down in Galveston or something? You don't take it down the ship channel to get to the Gulf, do you? That's a classic boat.

Yes unfortunately I do take it down the ship channel to get into the Gulf. With work and everything else it makes more sense to keep it in Clear Lake. I can get down there after work in a hurry and go for a short evening sail in Galveston bay. I much prefer to get her out into deep water where she really performs ...we just won 1st in fleet in a 62nM offshore race. We have a nice marina in Clear Lake that my wife and young son enjoy spending time at and it is only a few minutes from the bay. She is a classic although this one is from the last production run (3 boats) and was launched in the late '80s.

to get back on topic, I can't wait to drive my recently fixed up old 911 down to my old boat.
