Way to go, guys. First round's on me at Fox and Hounds. Name the time as long as my wife will okay it for me. :D

Tyson Schmidt 04-23-2004 11:25 AM

Thanks everyone!

And thank you Jack for letting me co-drive. You're an excellent teammate, and an all around great human being.

And to think, Jack and I were just going to treat this like a "test and tune" event. We had no idea we'd have a shot at the overall with such tough competition. The car was just awesome! (Although not a lot of fun in the wet!)

Finally a first place trophy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/roker.gif (better than sex)
:)

I've finally caught up on my sleep, so tonight would be good for me for beers.

dd74 04-23-2004 11:34 AM

Too close in advance for me, Tyson. Family commitments, etc. Next week sometime?

Wow! You sound like my boss! :D

Jack Olsen 04-23-2004 12:17 PM

Thanks again, everyone.

How about next Thursday for drinks at the Fox and Hounds?

I'm going to try and write up a diary this weekend, but here's a glimpse of how much we carried, and what we looked like on the highway.

Now THAT is truly the spirit of the event. Not only driving it to each track, but no chase car. Talk about confidence in the car. That car is so reliable all you need is a jack and a lug wrench to swap out the wheels.

Bill Verburg 04-23-2004 12:27 PM

Congratulations guys! Nice job!!:)

JTO 04-23-2004 01:07 PM

Jack
That is so cool that you didn't trailer the car! Is that part of the rules for the event or did others trailer their cars?

Beyond words,
Troy

bigrubberjeep 04-23-2004 01:08 PM

IT was "RULES" that the car was to be driven from track to track

nostatic 04-23-2004 02:50 PM

this event reminds me of the good old days of mountain bike racing. No pit support, so assistance. You carry all your own stuff.

Great job guys. I also noticed a 3rd in T3 for the 944S2 beating out some of the EVOs and S2000s. Not bad for a bunch of old cars...

cstreit 04-23-2004 03:15 PM

Excellent job guys! Hat's off to you.

Great Job guys! I’ve been busy lately so I haven’t posted much, but I’ve been getting on daily to see how you’re doing. I’ll have a beer in your honor and look forward to the next time I can toast w/ you. Congrats!!

Yes, it turned out that a 3 liter Porsche did challenge the EVO's. Congrats to the Lofgrens for a podium finish in T3 and a class win in T4 with their Mini Cooper S.

It's interesting to note that throughout the 3 OTC's that the Porsches of Jack, the Lofgrens, and Chris Rooke(996 Twin Turbo) have had little or no mechanical problems. They've worn out tires or brake pads but for the most part, the cars were solid.

Jack Olsen 04-23-2004 09:05 PM

The Lofgrens were the Cinderella story of the whole event, in my opinion. 1:55's at Sears Point and 2:05's at Thunderhill are pretty amazing times for a four-banger.

So how are your tires? All used up? I must say, your car looks quite Mad Max-like with all that rubber on the roof. It looks ready for Armageddon. Or at least ready for a romp in East Hollywood. :)

We ran the whole OTC on one set of tires. We started with unscrubbed, un heat cycled tires, which made the first day quite intersting for me. The pictures from that day tell the story. Lots of WRC-type slip-angles!

But they felt pretty great after that, and didn't go away until the last session of the last day. In fact, I went sideways over Magic Mountain at Buttonwillow, and skipped 4 times after being airborn.
I can't tell you how many things ran through my head while in the air, cresting the hill sideways with all 4 tires off the pavement, then skipping 4 times before coming to a stop. I was sure it would flip, and Jack would have the rights to my first-born. I had very little warning. Once they went away, they were just gone.

But then again, I was driving like a man possesed trying to beat Rossi. It's hard to describe the mental state in this situation. The survival instincts are put on hiatus. After you pull into the pits is when you get scared.

Wouldn't that be a straight trade for Scruffy's engine? ;)

Yeah, at Sears someone in timing said "Oh, that's a turbo" when they heard Rick Lofgren's time. Somebody that knew Rick's car told them "No it isn't!"

Jack Olsen 04-23-2004 11:22 PM

Here's Tyson getting tagged by a couple of CHP officers. According to the guy who took the picture they got him at 112 on the front straight of Buttonwillow. :)
