2.4E or S vs. 74/75 MFI Carrera vs. Carrera 3.0
I'm researching the build of a historic race car.
Australian rules require the cars to be fairly stock and maintain their original drivetrain, including induction type. Suspension is pretty free, brakes must remain stock (cooling ok), engine capacity stock but cams, comp ratio etc free. Wheel sizes stock. How do you think a 72 or 73 911 MFI 2.4 on 6" wheels would fair against a (similarly spec'd) 74/75 MFI Carrera running 7's and 8's? The power will be lower but so will the (stock) weight - which should even things out somewhat. Brakes will have an easier time on the lighter early car. My gut feel is that, on a track, the lack of rubber will make a big difference. Any thoughts? The other option is a Carrera 3.0 (way cheaper over here than a 74/75) - but the ones competing at present seem to be hampered by having to run mild cams to suit the CIS. The 72/73 will win on looks...

Cool, after Targa Tas I'm going to race in historics, we'll be able to race each other. Already got a Sc Historic log book for the car.
The research I did before buying indicated that an MFI car was easier to get extra power out of while staying within regs, but a 3 liter Carrera was way cheaper than a 2.7 Carrera (the other option I considered). Something else to consider is that the 3 liter Carrera is the only 911 in historics that can run 50 series rubber. The earlier cars do look better, but those big steel bumpers are good in a collision... but lets not talk about that ![]()

Definitely the Carrera 3.0.
More displacement, more wheel and rubber.
