My understanding is that the "lines" that you see across the tread of the RA-1's is a telltale for wear. If you see two of them in succession around the circumference, they're done. For reference, the one below is not fully showing. The line should be plain to see across the entire tread. It becomes more apparent as the tread is worn away.

I would keep using those. The funnel-shaped indicators are still there.

Yup. They have allot of track life left. I got more than 70 heat cycles out of my last set of RA1's. Never saw any cords. I threw them out after I put too many flat spots on them.

When you say you did "an inner to outer flip", do you mean that you had the tires removed from the rims and re-mounted.

I met someone who had switched his RA-1's left to right without re-mounting, so that the tires were rotating opposite to the direction indicator on the sidewall. Is this kosher? They had lost most of their tread so I guess there was no issue with the directionality of the tread. Is there something in the internal construction that dictates rotation direction?

On a related note, I am getting much heavier wear on the outside of the tire than the inside. I have -2 degrees camber in front and -2.5 in back. Would more negative camber be a good idea. Would it make the car unpleasant on the street? Can you get more negative camber on a 964 without modifications?
Thanks,

Jamil

I run my lefts on my right in order to even out the wear.

i swapped sides by removing the tire from the rim and swapping inner to outer because mine wore the outside quicker too. this allowed them to remain in the rotation direction as per the sidewall arrows and move the side with remaining tread out.

not sure about running track tires one way then the other direction but a tire guy told me that was no good for radial tire as a rule. something about the stress on the steel belts reversing and possibly causing tire failure by compromising the strength of the belts where they meet the sidewall.

Don't swap without removing from the rim, especially for the track. They're directional for a reason. Also, RA1's like a ton of camber (-2.5 to -5.0 degrees per Toyo) for the best wear. That's why most see outer edge wear first. It's very difficult to get enough camber on a street driven car.

edit: I stand corrected, it seems the directional tread is only a concern in wet conditions.

from http://www.roadracemotorsports.com/toyo.htm

- The directional nature of the RA1 tread pattern is only applicable for wet conditions to optimize water drainage. If they are being used in dry conditions, the direction of rotation does not matter

These tires are not directional anymore.

You can extend the life the tires by flipping them on the rim.

Yep about the directional. Only for wet.

Same goes for 710's. Run 'em either direction.

I just had my 888's mounted in/out today.
I've done this with *every* set of track tires I've ever run.

Wouldn't the uninformed be exposed as a novice if they were to utter such nonsense? Wouldn't it be intuitively obvious to them that you are an expert? A honed machine, bristling with experience and knowledge? A coiled viper, ready to attack any curve, seething with disdain for any newbie's drivel? A hulking, gargantuan....

never mind. run your arrows forward, you'll pick up a few tenths.

Same directional thing applies for Victoracers (and the flip inside out thing) Yokohama A032R (if anybody has any of these left, they're OLD like mine) and Hankook Z211. They can all be run inside out and backwards.

The one R compound that I can think of that may not like it or perform lesser would be the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup. The outer shoulder is constructed differently than the inboard side and their documentation for the tire makes no mention of flipping the tire when the tread pattern begins to disappear, like other manufacturers DO recommend

The only thing I can think of at the moment that should also force you to reverse the direction of the tire is an exposed tread splice.
