learn me about center nets

looking to get the basics on mounting a center net such as this one >>>> http://www.ioportracing.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=C5R+Net&Category_Code=WN

can they generally be mounted on the front side to the knee bar portion of your cage? or will they require a higher mounting spot such as a dedicated welded on bracket? can they be mounted to the dash frame's steel components? ive heard there are specific angles that must be met.

could i see some pics of the mounting points front & rear? might you cut & paste portions of rule books that state if able?

thank you in advance.

toby

I'd strongly suggest checking out local PRC cars... perhaps over at Jerry Woods Enterprises/SmartRacing Products. I have a collection of photos if you need some ideas. Also you can check in with Tony Colicchio. I think he has installed a few in 911 cars.

yeah, i read that after i got home today. seems like it will be tough to get it as high as that diagram seems to indicate on the front side. i still hope for a few pictures to be posted. mike suggest going to a PRC event and that would be a great idea! but the next PRC event i go to i want to be doing more than window shopping.... the link in the PDF rule book page you include is the same unit i link to io port with

maybe i will give tony a call as i will need to see him soon again anyhow.

Give Ag a call to discuss how the guys in the Coop are mounting these. I'm pretty sure that they were attaching them to the weld-in strut brace and putting a hole in the dash to run the webbing.

I spent quite some time researching this when the rule was implemented, even though it does not affect me.

There are a number of different brands of nets, and choices on install approaches. best to stick with someone with Porsche experience. There are known solutions/processes for 911s. You are on the right path with TC Design in my opinion.

Through the front is the plan. I'm out of town this weekend, but I'll try to swing by the coop next weekend to check out the setups.

Toby. I mounted the front to the dash. There was a small hole to the right of the clock from something I took out (it was a switch of some type, but I can't remember which one). I put a steel backing plate in there and attached an eye bolt. You can see it in the first picture.

I then attached the back straps to the roll cage (one at the top bar and one at the harness bar) and attached the front to the eye bolt.

The setup puts the net in the right place according to the rules and I have passed NASA and PCA inspections with no issues or comments. Contact me if you have any questions

thanks paul. maybe i was over thinking this. in my original post i ask if it was possible to mount to the dash "framing", which i meant to be the steel area of the dash frame. i like the simple approach of the eye bolt.

I went thru the center right AC vent, to an eye hook mounted to the firewall. I selected a Safety Solutions Kevlar net (GrandAm requires Kevlar nets on both sides). It's mounted in the right location and the quick release works as it should. Sorry no pics.

I used an existing hole through the dash. Essentially took aircraft grade 1/4" steel cable and secured one end to the strut brace bar. Then through the dash... Then I secured it to my cage and adjusted the height.

Is a center net required if you have an FIA halo type seat?

Tony's been installing a bracket to our knee bars in the 944's. Most of us started with the net connected to the knee bar but it really made the angles not quite right. Worked, but could be improved. So he now welds a ring and bracket to the knee bar to raise the front attachment point by about 4".

I can try to get pictures later if anyone wants to see.

Drew,

At least in NASA, if you have a Halo seat you do not need a right side net.
