wear rate on Hawk HT-10 pads

I was looking for some input from forum members that drive PCA DE events for expected pad wear rates for my 79 930 turbo.

I had just gotten back from a 3 day event at Watkins Glen where I averaged 3 20minute sessions per day or roughly 1 hour per day for 3 days of DE.

I managed to wear thru a new set of Hawk HT-10 pads on the front of the car and thought this was excessive. I had never seen such a high wear rate with track pads before,. I only switched to them from the Blue compound 3 seasons ago and this was only my second set of HT-10. The first set I know had lasted at least a few track weekends.....but not sure how many since I was not keeping accurate track of it.
Definitley never went thru one full set in only one weekend before.

Question: Is this normal wear for these pads or is there some anomoly happened this past weekend?
How many minutes or hours of aggressive track day driving should I expect from a set of race compound pads like these? I know this is an open ended question but looking for a ballpark number.

thanks,
Fred

Fred,

Missed this thread before responding to the other one. Like I said, my HT-10s do not wear as fast as you've described. I don't put as much time on them as you do in a day, since I only do a practice, qualify and race. Still, mine have shown minimal wear in the approximate one year, 8 race events i've used them.

When you find out what your cause of high wear is (likely heat/lack of cooling), i'd give the PF97 a try too. Our local group has used these w/out issue for years. Good bite but not too much and good wear. I feel its an all around good track pad for most anyone. It's an enduro pad so it's certainly not the most aggressive pad available. Very good all purpose race pad. And they come pre-bedded too, which is a nice feature.

Why are your rears wearing so poorly?

3 day events at the glen can be pretty hard on brakes.. back straight, 130ish down to 75ish, Front straight 120ish down to 70ish.. braking for the downhill (lots of folks ride their already hot brakes on this one) another jolt at the toe and heel..

is the rest of the brake system stock? What tires are you running?

Brake system is stock except I removed both backing plates front and rear. The front rotors have the AJUSA brake cooling ducts and the rotor hat that ducts air into the eye of the rotor.
The floating cross drilled rotors were replaced with slotted rotors 2 years ago when the stock rotors wore out. I added the cooling at this time to the fronts.
Just to clarify it was the front pads that were new (90% really since they saw 1000 street miles before the event) and wore down to the backing plates in 3 days of DE.
Tires were street BFGoodrich no track rubber. So my braking was a little earlier than I would have if I were running track rubber, admittedly.

Fred,

Here's my front pad wear after one race day at Autobahn Joliet South (ABCC) and one DE day at Blackhawk Farms (BHF). The ridge is on there because I have yet to mill down my caliper adapter mounting surface to lower the caliper a slight bit. So the pad overhangs above the rotor that slight amount. Pads were filed flat before aforementioned two days noted above. So while not ideal for pad positioning, it is a visible gauge of pad wear if nothing else......

Note that these pads have also been in service since June 2010.

June '10 DE weekend at BHF- first time out with the new car, eight 20 min. sessions

July '10 test day @ BHF, parked after two 25 min. rain sessions with carb trouble

August '10 NASA weekend @ Gingerman- competition school Sat., race schedule Sunday

Sept. '10 NASA weekend @ ABCC, 2 race days (two ea. 15 min. practice & qualify, two 35 min. races)

Oct. '10 NASA weekend @ Putnam, 2 race days (two ea. 15 min. practice & qualify, two 25 min. races)

April '11 NASA weekend @ ABCC, 2 race days; mostly wet Sat., dry Sun.

May '11 NASA weekend @ Putnam, 2 race days; RAIN (one dry session all weekend)

June '11 NASA weekend @ Grattan, 2 race days; three races

July '11 NASA weekend @ ABCC, 2 race days (two ea. 15 min. practice & qualify, two 35 min. races). HOT weather

August '11 PCA DE day @ BHF, four 30 min. sessions

I'm not the fastest guy out there, but I do okay. Point being is i'm not pussyfooting around. I drive the car hard and get the brakes plenty hot. Probably a bit too hot since I still have some work to do on my braking distances and threshold braking.

BHF is hard on brakes because it's a fast short track that doesn't give the brakes a chance to cool down much at all. I now run 1:18's there, which is a pretty good lap for my car.
