Project GT2 is underway!

After doing only one DE this year, in January, I started with the complete rebuild of my track car and getting it ready for GT2. I had the rollcage put in 3 months ago and then it sat while I worked on my 944, shopped for my 996 and remodeled my home (gotta keep the wife happy ).
I recieved my complete fiberglass kit last week and I started the dissmanteling this weekend. I started from the rear forward. I have the outline of where I'm going to cut. I will be using DZUS fasteners. I have no clue what I'm doing? I problably should have a 6-pack before I start cutting Tell me what you think?

Armando, are you building this car for SCCA GT2? Your cut lines look similar to mine, except at the very rear at the taillite mine is cut straight along the deck line without saving the taillite frame.

I'm coming after you Joe
Yes, SCCA GT2 and if my counting is right R3 in PBOC. I want to use the stock tail lights. I'm also keeping the stock door. I cut as much metal as I could off of it and it's only 7lbs more than a FG one, plus I kept the side beam for extra protection.
All four corners and the hood are FG. The bumpers and rockers are OEM plastic which seem kinda heavy but I'll address that later. I'm still trying to decide weather to keep the 964 look or backdate.

Armando,

BEFORE slicing all that metal away, have you "tied" the cage structure to at least the shock towers? If not, that would be a good idea while the ridgidity offered by the steel body is keeping everything where it should be.

To state the obvious, before welding the runners to those towers, make certain the suspension and frame are PERFECTLY level. You will not get a second chance to get it right.

Great project! Best of success with it!
Ed

Yes Ed, I have the shock towers braced and connected to the rollcage. They did it with the rollcage install.

I can't tell you that.....

For now, it's the stock 3.2 with headers. I'm trying to get all the tedious work out of the way, the bodywork and electrical. I want to do sprints with this engine then I'm planning a rebuild for late next year. That will also give me more time to plan what I'm going to do with it.

Yeah, it funny how one thing leads to another and before you know it

I try not to think about the complete picture just one mod at a time.

That is a good way to do it. I am in the beginning stages of planning an upgrade for my engine.

No turning back now...

I can't believe I only lost 10lb per side.

Yeah, my car is all fiberglass except the roof, and I'm still about 150 pounds heavier than the car came stock.

Cool project, though.

Jack, have you given any thought to where that weight is? (Presumably drivetrain is a lot)... What about cage?

Not speaking for Jack here but some of it has to be in the brakes, cage, wheels, tires, AC, and motor that his car never came with new...

Cheers

The 3.6 is lighter than a 3.2, I believe. But some of the weight is there.

More weight comes from the cage, brakes, wheels, and of course... the air conditioning.

Juan, I want to get rid of that big ugly oil tank and put one in the smugglers box. Where did you get yours?
