Accusump track oiling issue

A Cayman (or maybe it was a Boxster) at a recent DE oiled a quarter mile of track and let off a smoke screen which would have done a WWII destroyer proud.

The car had an Accusump (which worked fine). To attach it, a sandwich plate was installed between the oil regulator system and the oil filter. In stock trim, the bottom of this filter is about even with the underside of the floor pan, and the bottom of the engine. With the adapter sandwich, it sticks down maybe 1.5" lower.

This track has quite a hump in it on a downhill straight, and if you have a good head of steam the car gets light and then settles heavily. This driver succeeded in bottoming the oil filter on the pavement as a result, which either ripped it off, ripped it open, or distorted its seal significantly.

Perhaps one could use a shorter oil filter with a setup like this? Having an oil filter sticking down like this sounds like it is inviting disaster - running with wheels on both sides of an apex or track out curb, for instance.

Might be better off replacing the sandwich adapter with a filter relocation adapter, if there is room.

If somebody makes a sandwich adapter, it's a pretty good bet that they or somebody else makes a remote oil filter mount.

Need specs of current sandwich adapter, then start looking for the same specs.

OR

It appears that LN Engineering makes a shorty billet oil filter

Bilt Racing Billet Washable 60-micron Racing Oil Filter. (Does not fit IMS Solution spin-on filter adapter) LN Engineering

or NAPA sells a shorty filter.

The kit I used replaced the stock filter with a short filter.

I have install god only knows how many oil accumulators on cars including just about every make and model of Porsches and BMW's that get tracked .

1st there are so many different oil filters that will fit the sandwich plates it's not funny .
you can swap out the stock Porsche filter from the boxster to a much shorter one there is a shorty filter Honda uses (not the small peanut ones ) that will fit the same threads of the sandwich plate . it does not hang lower then the stock set up does .

the thing with accumulators is that if the system leaks it's designed to always give a oil pressure of no less then 40 to 45 LBS so the piston in the accumulator will push all the 1 QT of oil out of the system thinking the motor is in need of it .

the accumulators are a good idea for most race cars as they will always give you oil pressure even at 1st start up of 40 to 45 lbs .

the down side to them is if some one has no idea about them and installing them you can totally ruin your motor and a run session at the track because of clean up time .

there are a couple of things you want to do when installing one . the 1st is buy the best quality sandwich plate and fittings you can find . the crap from ebay with out a brand name is not what you want to us it's 1/2 the cost for a good reason .

using or trying to use a twin port sandwich plate if your not using a loop system like with a oil cooler too is not a good idea . you would want to use the single port plate if your only using the accumulator all by it's self .
the reason is the extra pressure could blow out over time the seal on the oil filter or the sandwich plate .

some porsches like the 944's that tend to spin the #2 bearings benefit greatly from installing a accumulator other porsches not so much so .
I have one customer that went thru 3 944 motors in one season of racing because of the #2 bearings . I installed a accumulator and he has had no problems in the last 2 1/2 seasons now .
