new (to me) cayenne
hello - i've been on the pelican 928 and 944 forums for a while now - well i pulled the trigger on this 2012 - came up on CL friday morning and i had it home by 3pm - 73,000 miles and hardly a scratch - bought it from a private party so i'm going through some of the basics - oil change, air filters, cleaning - can these really go 20,000 miles on an oil change? - seems pretty long - just found out i can't reset the oil service light without a tool - hmmmm - oh, porsche ..kind of a love/hate relationship going on here - just thought i'd check in here and say hello since i'm sure i'll be picking your brains for info on this car

Congrats and Welcome.
We change our oil every year, I think the the recommended mileage is 5000, but check the manual. You can get a Durametric or other tools to reset the warning.

Congratulations, I love my 06 Cayenne S. I do all the work myself, also on my 911’s.

V6 or V8?
Like most modern Porsches, the cars have an oil wear indicator /monitor. Read the owners manual, but yes, the oil change interval is likely longer than you expect mileage wise (not time wise though). And yes, you will need a laptop/software as part of your toolkit or find a friend who does.

Nice. Mine is silver as well. I have used it a lot for towing and long trips...plus, it is my daily driver.
I use a durametric and laptop to reset my codes. I rarely change my oil (synthetic) yet ,me 04 Turbo has racked up about 180k miles so far without serious problem.

well..after me and the PO had agreed to a price and i got him a cashiers check and we sign the papers he hands me the key - that's right ..not keys..just one - says he bought it used and never had another key - hmmm - so i'm thinking ..ok, i'll pay $300 or so for another key - i called porsche and they quoted me $650 - i can buy a blank fob online for $40 - they don't have the porsche logo but ... i can't find anyone local to.. a. answer my message or b. program it for less than $400 - i ran across this programmer online...Yanhua Mini ACDP Porsche BCM Key Programmer with Module10 - has anyone used one of these? - claims it can program keys if you hook it up to the BCM - that's all it does...code keys - i can find it for $340 - so a total of $380 for a key - if anyone has used one and it worked could they post on here please - thanks

Sadly, no.. the modern car key is hard to replace cheaply. Getting the key cut can be an issue too, not just the programming. Apple/oranges, for my son's 2003 Audi, it cost about $300 for the dealer to order through Audi a key cut using the VIN and then have the dealer program it.
It seems $300-600 is the new normal. If you find a better way, let us know!

couple of quick questions (i hope) -
1: is there a way to make my phone automatically connect to the car when it's started or do i have to manually connect it each time - the ford edge connects automatically to a set phone and that's pretty nice 2: what are the 2 tiny slide out things below the rear door handles? - they are to small too actually put anything in - do they have a specific purpose? 3: why does the clock reset every time i open the door? - when i lock the car the clock spins itself to 12 oclock can you make it keep time always? ok that's 3 questions - i've looked for answers in the manual but it doesn't address these questions as far as i could see

and back to the key - i called a local independent porsche shop - he said he talked to his tech who formerly worked for a local porsche dealer and the tech said a 2012 cayenne key can only be programmed by a dealer - anybody know if that's true? - and that price i quoted for the key programmer above is not correct - $340 gets you the module only for porsche cars - you would still need the basic programmer added to that so $$$ - still looking

I was looking at a used 2012 today.. (..dreaming and looking not test-driving, I didn't even kick the tires) but, seriously I always liked the Cayenne the earlier body style is starting to have a nice classic look. 2012 era saw some changes to the original shape? Anyway, very nice and hope you find a work around for the key or at least get it remade and just forget about the cost. It is nearly impossible to have just one key.

some better (maybe) pics of my "new" ride - it took an entire day to clean it - the PO gave me receipts for work and service he had done at local dealership - some for $$$ - but oddly he wasn't big on keeping the inside clean - anyway it's all good and on the road

Interior looks like luxury should.
Since you have a few of the old service records, any mention of work on the Transfer Case?

hey kraftwerk - as a matter of fact the transfer case was replaced at the dealer this past january - that was the big buck item i have a receipt for - i assume from your question it's a common failure - still figuring out all the bells and whistles - still can't find any mention of what those tiny slide out drawers in rear doors are for - also why i can't get the rear hatch to open using button in drivers door - might have to open up panel and take a look

Sounds like you're good to go. Seems every vehicle has its weak points and the T.C. on these certainly are.... from the little that I have read.

hey rsbob - that is indeed the case of the engine running to open - even more bizarre is that you can't close it with that button or the remote? - so i have to get out of car and hit button on hatch to close - hmmm - our ford edge will go both ways with remote or button on dash - and i did find in manual that the 2 little drawers in back doors are ash trays..?? - kind of funny..here in U.S. most new cars come with the ash trays kind of removed - and those drawers have rubber liners in the bottom of them, so not sure if they can be used as ash trays - anyway, they are too small for anything else - don't think even a phone would fit in them

is it even possible to lock yourself out of a cayenne? - the doors won't lock while they are open - but what if i get out of car, lock it, then open hatch, leave keys in there and hit hatch close button? - i can't try it with one key...but is it possible? - if so i'd need an extra blade key somewhere to open door...just in case

got a new key fob online - called a different porsche dealer and he said $250 to program it and $100 to cut the blade - he said sometimes they can't program non-porsche keys - i've read where if a key has ever been programmed to another car it can't be programmed again - don't know if it's true but this key is supposed to be brand new - so i'm going to try and have them program it - got the blade cut at ace hardware for around $7 - some questions and/or observations
there is a hold function to keep car from moving on hills - does this cause a very slight hesitation on acceleration? - i assume the electric rear brakes do the holding so a split second for them to release? as soon as i open door i hear a motor sound from rear of car - can't figure out what that is? - lasts 1-2 seconds?? i mentioned the clock thing - what is the purpose of the clock resetting itself every time i get in car? the way i read the manual the driver settings get re-remembered every time i lock the car? - so if i change anything right before getting out of car and lock it that becomes my new setting? this car produces more brake dust than any other car i've owned - i've cleaned the wheels twice in 300 miles and they are covered again - will different pads correct this? as i'm slowing to a stop the car shifts down through each gear - i can feel a tug of deceleration every time it shifts down - normal? - my old van would coast forever while this car seems to have an actual drag like a manual transmission - also the car does not drop to 1st until it is actually stopped - so if i am going like 2 mph then step on gas it will downshift to 1st abruptly - i find it will not downshift to 1st if i'm very easy on the accelerator - and this accelarator is VERY touchy a possible issue - i catch just a whiff of coolant after pulling into garage - i've looked and can see no leaks or seeps around radiator, hoses or water pump - coolant level seems to be holding - i'll have to keep an eye on that anyway ..the car is fast and so far fun to drive - so it's just a case of becoming accustomed to it now - thanks to all for the welcomes and answers/advice
