off road cred

I'm finally interested in buying a Cayenne. Currently in my Porsche stable are an '82 911 and '70 914-6. However, I'm especially interested in off road ability. I have a tired old full size Bronco that's near it's end. It has served me well over the years. I enjoy off road as well as on road. As I understand it, all Turbos and GTS's came with locking differentials. Is that true? I have seen several option codes for skid plates and locking diffs, but can't seem to get a handle on which are which. Are any of you able to shed any light on a Cayenne's true off road ability?

I can comment here for sure, my 06 Cayenne did great on a back country hunting trip. It has 4-wheel drive and factory skid plates. Plenty of power to go up steep hills I shouldn't have, down them with ease as well.

Trekked along hill sides and I always felt good balance, ground clearance was good, a few close calls but that's what the skid plate is there for. Overall, I came across many jeeps in hard to reach areas and they asked me what the heck am I doing with a Porsche up there. Some folks thought I was insane but I had a blast and the car did it easily. Enjoy!!

Certainly my 2006 CTTS has this option to lock rear axle and then lock the diff. Search for the Cayenne hand book and it gives the details of operation.

Search for this document on Google or here on pelican

"owners_manual_cayenne_pcna.pdf"

The section you require "off road driving" is on page 177

I have got my 2004 Cayenne Turbo stuck in sand once. The pickup that came to rescue us also got a little stuck so we got a four-wheel-drive farm tractor to get out. Be warned: If you get your Cayenne stuck, it will be stuck pretty good.

I did get it stuck more recently, when the snow was deep and I forgot that the road had been reconfigured in the fall. That time, locking the differentials got me out relatively easily. Driver technique is a big factor, but the Cayenne isn't going to hold you back.
