about to finish prep of tub for primer.

started thinking about exhaust. anyone use the stock Z06 mufflers?

found this and it looks interesting..... wondering about if/how it would fit.

and not sure I would like the quad tips on a 911's butt.

almost done putting the rebuild engine back in the 951 track car. no work on the 911 lately, BUT.

I just read GM is selling a new version of the LS7. wet sump and 570hp. for $12k.

will be putting my focus on the 911 as soon as the 951 is back on the road...

so two weeks later....

got the AC lines pulled, rebuilt, and back in the 951. got the engine under the car but have realized it was easier to drop without the cyl head and accessories....

hope to get it up and at least bolted to the TT today.

finally got the replated rear torsion plates from Shaun. will be posting all my work on the 911 now on this forum.

gratuitous pics.

after over 15 yrs of owning/working on a number of Porsche 944, 951, 928, and an 85 911, I have decided it is time to stop racing and wrenching and take up flying.

I have had this project for almost 7 yrs and it has been 'sucking hind teet' to all the other cars. have sold them and now down to this project and a 87 924S project I will probably do as a safari.

it is stripped to the tub, on a rotisserie, and mostly sand blasted to bare metal and ready for primer. but dont have the enthusiasm to do the work to finish. rather be flying now.

would appreciate thoughts on a value.

sold the badly abused 930 motor. have a 930 4sp gearbox. other than no engine everything is there, with a lot of upgraded stuff. was thinking LS conversion.

would appreciate ideas of value and hearing from anyone interested. make me an offer I cannot refuse.

I bought the 911 I have off eBay for $20k. It had lots of good aftermarket suspension parts, big brakes, a rebuilt 930 turbo trans and a 6k mile LS2. It had most of the bits on it, needed assembly and sorting out, but I thought it was a pretty good deal for a painted tub. If you want details the build thread so far is on here, just under your post.

Tracker,

My uncle purchased Larry's LS7 Mast build couple years back. Car is a beast at 704 crank hp. Very difficult to drive with cam lope and aggressive clutch - speaking with him its like an off/on switch and will easily make u look like a high school kid that cannot drive stick in front of the local Sonic. I would be conservative with cam and clutch selection. The LS3 Hot Cam seems like a winner. I have not read thru your build thread fully so apologize if discussed, but seems Renegade likes the stock LS3 engine in these builds. At sub 2500 lbs plenty of power...

I had talked to Larry just after he sold that car. incredible build and it sounded to me like way too much of a beast for track or the street. very different power / tq delivery and I have always heard the 935s were a total beast too. harsh and violent.... and FAST

I sold the 911 project to the same guy who bought my 951 track car and trailer. He is in the process of leaving the Air Force and wanted to get a street/track car and start having some fun. my car was turn-key, needed nothing. so far he has only made it to a few autocross but having fun and enjoying the occasional driving on the street. looking forward to doing HPDE.

when he bought that car and I told him I was considering selling the 911, he said he wanted it, has always lusted for a 911 slantnose. he has degrees in electrical engineering (masters) and mechanical engineering from MIT. so he can handle the project. he also has a few interesting old cars, if I recall an old cadillac herse and an austin mini. his tow vehicle is a older F-350 diesel in great shape, only 80k miles.

so we got the tub on the rotisserie loaded into his trailer. will take a number of trips to get all the parts. he is planning an LS build, not sure which engine he will use. I was considering the LS7, lastest crate engine now wet sump and 560hp/500tq? that is still a LOT in what should be about a 2500lb car. I tend to agree the hot cam LS3 would be a good choice. my project does not have an engine but does have a good 930 4sp that will be perfect for an LS.

also the good is he only lives 50 mi away. so I will get a chance to help him build it and hopefully live long enough to see it built.

so now I have to borrow HIS trailer to get my ultralight plane (quick silver sprint single seat) that is about 200 mi away at a shop that builds them. also taking flying lessons there. going down next week and should be finished with training. we are going over the plane (it was used but in great shape), have done most of the maintenance, such as replace all fuel line, clean carbs, etc. next week we'll get it back together for test flights before I bring it to the airfield near me where it will live and I will fly.

sad to see this post just end. but some good insight & learnings here. Hoping to start my build thread in the coming months.

Love documenting the process. Built an offroad G55 AMG at the start of the pandemic and was really satisfying having a log of the work I did, which helped other builders.

Can't wait to jump into this one.

I was told I can get a LS3 crate motor for just under $10k, and about another $5k for the rest of the stuff to complete.

That would definitely be the easiest route. It simply depends on how much you want to get your hands dirty and what type of performance you want the car/engine to have. At $10k I would start looking at rebuilding the original engine. I think you would come out better buying a used/junkyard LS series engine for about $200~1000 and refreshing it for another $1000 or so. Then add another $1500 for engine management (preferably holley). 10K vs 3.5k and you'll be able to rev higher than the LS3 (saving that 911 feel)
