Your best bet is the type 4 motor, same as in the 914. a stock 2.0L will be a big upgrade from your stock 1600 or you can go much bigger.

I have a 1.7L 914 engine in my beetle and it fits nicely, and I have it coupled to a 901 5 speed from a porsche 911

how about the mounting surfaces for the engine and tranny. will porsche and vw interchange? will all porsche interchange within a reasonable time period(model year). does the tranny just bolt up to the frame?

you can mate a 914 engine up to your VW tranny fairly easily.
you need a vw bos flywheel 200-210mm have the beetle pilot bearing pressed into the flywheel
then you can use a beetle pressureplate and clutch disc

everything just bolts up.
