Type 34 Karman Ghia with 2.4 MFI Motor

Hi Hebster, thanks for the bump. Yep I am running the later IRS rear subframe wit out the rear horns.

You will need to fabricate a rear cross member and support and a centre support. The centre support in my car is an aluminium plate bolted to the top engine / gear box bolts.
The standard T3 set up only has a front and rear mount. But the Flat 4 is a lot lighter than the flat 6. From memory a Flat 4 VW motor is around 100kgs.

I am about to do some work to my Karman in the next couple of weeks to get ready for a long road trip (about 3000k's) and I will take a bunch of pictures while its up off the ground for you.

Thanks Dean! Yes, the stock T-3 engine is 125 kilos compared with about 182 kilos (have I been told) for the Flat6.

It would be great if you can take detailed pictures of the engine mounts and supports you have on your car.

BTW. I think that the engine ant tranny on a 911 is only mounted in the front of the gearbox as well as the rear of the engine too?

The only difference might be that the original 911 gearbox is stronger so it can handle the weight?

Nice car, I've never seen a Type 34 before, and I've seen Karman Ghia's with pink fur on them - for real.

been a while since I posted this thread and I have been getting a few emails about my T34 so i thought I would post up some new pics.

Not done any more major work to the Karmann over the past year. Just been out and about enjoying it.

I have managed to get the correct front bumper and fitted that. Trying to get it looking as stock as possible. see pic

Was even used in a National Clothing Catalogue photo shoot earlier this year. See pic

Took it to a VW only Drag Racing Day at a place called Heathcote in Victoria. Ran mid 15's all day. And the mightly 2.4mfi didnt miss a beat all day. Drove it 160ks to get home straight after too. That was a fun day.

I´m building a similar setup, a 65 razor with a -73 2.4T engine.

A couple of years ago i had the engine in a fasty, pics seen below.

That car is sold, but i kept the engine.




Here´s the new project.


The rims are 8,5 in the rear and 7 in the front.

Hey Turburs930, nice to hear from a previous owner of my Ghia. The 2.0S motor was blown up on a dyno in Perth about 3 years ago. Its still in the possesion of the guy I purchased the Ghia off. The 2.4 was fitted just before I got it. Supplied by Swan Porsche parts in Perth. I have changed a few things in the time I have owned it. The oil line plumbing was causing a few problems, changed the seats. Few more things I would like to do some day too. Top of the wish list, is 944 brakes and a 5 speed box. Plus full lining with Dynamat so sound proof it a little better.
If you are in Melb, come along and have a look at it some day.

I´m using a 901 gearbox, and 944 suspension in the rear.

In the front i havent decided yet what to use.

Greyn57, where abouts in Melb are you, I have moved to Townsville Qld now and am currently rebuilding a 1982 930 turbo, I hope to have the motor back together in a couple of weeks.

Its great to see the Karmann is still going strong.

Hi dean! As you allready have the IRS rearsuspension it is the simplest thing to convert to 944 brakes in the rear.

I guess I mentioned that I sold my T34 but still am doing a 911 conversion, but on a Type2 Double Cab now instead.

The 944 stubaxles and bearinghousing including hubs, discs and calipers are a easy bolt-on to the VW trailingarms. I have allready done the rear conversion to my Doublecab. And I'm now starting to fit the 2,0l 911T engine to the rear...
