Best 911 engine/transaxle combo to use for karmann ghia swap?

I have been looking at the information on historical 911 engine/transmission combinations for a Karmann Ghia swap. For practical purposes, lower power is no great problem (since power magnifies the amount of suspension rework and legal compliance work needed), and 915 transmission is most compatible with the existing KG frame. (I believe G50 would require more extensive work).

So I am probably looking at an engine 2.4-3.2L, fairly old by now. What I am looking for is the relatively cheap, reliable, easy to service as opposed to exotic, rare, high powered, turbo etc. Hopefully I can find an engine of an 'undesirable' type or one that people swap out to put in a bigger engine themselves.

I would like to find a complete engine/transmission that needs only fuel and a battery to start it, from some dismantler, preferably with some life in it.

What I want to know is - of this range, are there any models/years to avoid or any that would be recommended? It is hard for a new person to know whether certain variants had expensive weaknesses, or parts are HTF, etc. Any help greatly appreciated. I can fabricate/weld so that part is not a problem. Also there is no need to remind me of the folly of the whole project.

Also, if anyone knows of a dismantler in either New Zealand, Australia or USA that can provide a intake to exhaust complete engine and are friendly to deal with, any contacts would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

Below are some USA dismantlers specializing in Porsche cars. The only one I have knowledge of is Jim at EASYpor. Good guy, great knowledge.
Good luck with your anticipated conversion.

Chris

The ideal engine will be a 3.0 sc from 1978-83 along with the aluminium casing 915.3.2 engines are far more expensive same goes for g50s.
Everything is possible ofcourse as a 1974 KG with 993 engine and six speed g64...

Good luck,
