Good job moving the thread to here. Did you do the conversion on the bus? I love the 160 speedo!
I'm thinking 2.2 E cam engine, and figure out a way to adapt the guts from the old 902/16 hillclimb gearbox I have lying around. The old 64 is a swingaxle unit.

Patrick,
Yes. We originally installed a '73 2.4E motor w/carbs. Put out about 160 h.p. Had enough power but not enough torque. The 3.2 set up was in our '73E targa. When I sold the targa I swapped the motors. The speedo & tach were part of the 3.2 set up, I made the oil pressure/temp/gas gauge.

We bought a totaled '86 for the engine, trans & parts. It was cheaper and more convenient. We grafted in the inner rear fender with the oil tank mount, the cross brace the has the rear shock mounts, and the tunnel. I wanted to use as many stock parts as possible. The only thing we modified on the engine was the rear engine hanger. Stock '77 axles were the right length bolted up. I'm putting a page together that gives a pretty good overview. I wanted it to look like a factory install which resulted in a bunch more work.

I would swap out the swing axle for an irs. I think the swing axle has reduction gear boxes.

Harold:
Thanks for the info. That is a really nice conversion. I may leave the kids bus alone; she has only gotten a drivers licence recently (she was 24), and this is her first vehicle. The only car she had ever driven was my SC (pre-turbo). I am thinking ahead for when she gets tired of it, and decides she needs something with A/C for life in the desert!

Very nice indeed. Thanks for the link to the brakes also. I'm right in the middle of my rear disk upgrade this winter.

Very nice indeed! I'm working on a very similar project even though with "only" a 2,0L 911 engine into my -67 Crewcab.

My Project here.

Did you use a stock 911 oiltank? Can you tell me what height it should be mounted compared to the engine? I have not yet been able to figure that out..

Here is a shot of the oil tank location. We cut out the inner rear fender of the 911 and welded it in. We used the stock oil tank and lines. I later added a Mocal cooler with a thermostat and fan under the bus. Use as many stock parts as possible, it will make your life easier.

Ok. Yes, I was planning to use as much stock parts as possible. Are the oiltube connectors higher/lower on the tank than on the engine?

I suppose the position of the oiltank more or less determines the oil level in the engine too? I have no idea. That's why I ask...

The bottom of the oil tank is approximately 4" higher than the bottom of the engine case. I measured this off of my 911 and the Crewcab. The motor holds about 3 quarts of oil and the oil tank about 8 quarts.

Thanks!! Perfect! Now I have something to go by when I start to fit in the oiltank.

Seems like your engine is slightly lower than mine when I look at how your fan is located towards the upper edge of the enginebay.

Rearview of mine.

Yes it does. You should check the intake system clearance to make sure it will fit. It was very tight with the stock 3.2 intake. I have just enough room to take the water shields off with the carbs.

Yes, I've checked the clearance. My Zeniths seem to have lower manifolds than the ones you had?
