todd, excuse me for answering mike's question. i have a longhood car with the early through the chassis sway bar...so i do not have that as an interference to deal with. also i converted an early tank as rh suggests and have a spare aluminum tank to sell. mounted two 255lph wahlberg pumps into the gas tank with a fuel pressure gauge in the dash very quite and plenty of pressure for my efi.. this makes it very easy to carry a 996 type spare in the front.

Whats your tank look like and how much you looking to get for it? If my Radiator design does not work out I will need to go to plan B with a front mount and tank modification

If you have some pictures please send

gas tank

this is the rh gas tank. i decided to go with the cut down regular tank and removed it from my car. i will sell for 60 per cent of what ever rh is selling these for now. i was running an external big horsepower pump that made way to much noise for me. so i converted to a cutdown tank with a fore precision fuel pump hat custom made for a lightning pickup truck the hat will hold up to 3 wahlberg fuel pumps and is not to difficult to custom mount in the porsche tank. i run two pumps with ss braided pressure and return lines.....dash 12 and dash 10., racing style fuel filter canister, and a pressure regulator. i had north hollywood make an appropriate dual gauge to mount in the clock opening that shows fuel pressure and oil temperature. . looks right and matches the other gauges. the straps on the tank i made to hold in place.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1252428792.jpg

Can any subscribers give any back ground on preffered trans adapter (Renegade Hybrids or kennedy Engineering?) Which is prefered brand an why?

mkingham 09-09-2009 12:46 PM

The adapter that Renegade sells is made by Kennedy. But the other key component that you need is the engine cradle. I don't think Renegade sells parts individually, so if you buy their base kit, you get both the cradle and the adapter (plus some other goodies) AND a wealth of knowledge when you call.

Don't get me wrong, this isn't an endorsement for RH, as you can see from this thread, there is A LOT of fabrication work needed to complete a conversion like this. The kit is by no means plug and play. I am one and a half years into the conversion and I'm at about the same point as 'shanghai_todd'. From his posts it looks like he is going on 3 years ... granted he seems to take long vacations in the Far East a few times a year :)

Todd, my apologies for hijacking your thread, I'll be quite now. Mike

Rebel911 11-03-2009 04:23 PM

I just got the basic kit from RH, where your lower horizontal engine cradle pieces pre drilled or did you have to drill yours?

mbaran 11-03-2009 04:26 PM

Ooh, another 911 LS swap. I just started mine about a week ago. My shiny new 930 transaxle is in the mail.

shanghai_todd 11-03-2009 08:52 PM

No they were not, every car is a little different so you need to be able to move the engine into place with backward and foward movement. Once you get it installed and the car and engine are settled into place then you drill the cradle. I did a 3-step drill process so that i would not burn out my bits. Takes a little more time but much easier

I just realize that I spent some time looking over your car at Euro Fest. It looked great!

shanghai_todd 11-04-2009 11:14 AM

Rebel911 and Mbaran, You guys plan on doing a post of your builds to share your information?

I have been out of the states for over a month so I have no new updates as far as my car. I did get the exhaust finished and will post some pictures as soon as I get my camera back :(

I am picking up my engine tonight. I just started my own build thread that I will be updating. here

Facey 11-04-2009 12:42 PM

why not make it side exit exhaust in place of excessive bending? noise a big concern?

mbaran 11-04-2009 02:19 PM

I will start my thread when I have an engine. Should be by next weekend I'll be able to start my thread here.

shanghai_todd 11-04-2009 06:25 PM

Cool, it is great to see more of these LS1 conversions on this site. Some may argue the fact or get sick but bottom line is my conversion bang for the buck has been cheaper. Not to mention I can walk into any auto store and by plugs, sensors, filters, coils, alternator, ect.. for a fraction of the price :)

Been awhile since my last update but figured I would share some of my results for my exhaust. My goal was avoid as much as possible sounding like a V8 Vette or Camaro and to remain a sleeper or 911 tone.

I ended up settling for (2) Dynomax Super Turbo Muffler and (1) Dynomax Cross-over muffler to eliminate any drone or resonating sounds. And believe it or not the car is now quieter than my previous SC exhaust.. Maybe to quite but I have not been able to Rev it up past 3K RPM as I am still having tuning problems, I suspect my programming in the PCM is wrong and will have to get professionally tuned :( More to come on this next week.

A local shop in Tampa did all the welding and ordering of U-bends and piping, The workmanship and quality is awesome to say the least. Given the small space and amount of bends they fabricated the entire setup. Highly Recommended.

mkingham 12-16-2009 04:50 AM

It looks like you welded something to the engine cradle from Renegade, are they supports for the cross over muffler?

How is the cooling working out?

shanghai_todd 12-16-2009 05:44 AM

Yes,I wanted to be able to remove the exhaust in sections so I added these supports and flanges at the header and before the Cross-over. I was also thinking of having a 2nd set of pipes made that would come off the header and directly into the cross-over which would eliminate the first 2 mufflers. I was actually surprised how quite the car is now but figure once I get it running on 8 cylinders it may be louder.

I have no spark at 2 and 7 which is causing my car to run extremely rich and not able to Rev past 2~3K. Still trouble shooting this problem :(

It is the Porsche gods forcing a return to 6 cylinders!
Just kidding, nice looking exhaust.

Can you pull one of the coil on plugs and check for spark at 2 or 7 with a spare spark plug?

Doug

aigel 12-16-2009 09:59 AM

Nice build!

The exhaust looks to get very close to the rear tire and the alternator. Make sure you shield it, so it doesn't cook those components.

When are you going to fire it up?

Can you switch some coilpacks with cylinders that are firing and see if the problem follows the coilpacks?

John

shanghai_todd 12-19-2009 04:18 PM

I did give that a try and the same problem, even checked the Hi/Low with a signal meter and still seem to get a pulse, not as frequent as the others so something is not right in either the timing or PCM program.

I have an LS6 intake I am going to swap out this weekend with a new set of injectors to see if I have any better luck.

Was also warned the the aluminum Typhoon intake would cause heat soak so considering the heavier weight and heat soak that is 2 strikes against it..

Will keep you posted

Todd,
For a few $ you can get a noid like to check that the injectors are being pulsed. If you are smelling raw fuel, I suspect you are getting fuel and not getting spark.

I'd bet it is the harness itself (can you pull the coil pack and ground an extra spark plug and see what happens? A good way to test would be to pull the fuel pump fuse, so it won't run and you are not dumping raw fuel.

Unless each coil has a driver within the ECU? If so, maybe the driver circuitry is dead on two cylinders.

New Years Update:
Received my new throttle body and LS6 intake last weekend and got around to installing. Does not have the bling factor of the previous aluminum Typhoon intake but much lighter and a better fit.

Unfortunately the pre existing problem has followed and the car still does not rev past 2K and smells rich with fuel. I am convinced that it has to be the programming in the PCM and needs to be tuned and diagnosed by a professional. Car starts every time and ideals just fine so I do not think it is anything major. Possibly could be an issue with the Mass Flow sensor as well.

Bad news is I will leave for China on the 5th and will not get to work on the car till I return in April :(

Help

Can someone measure this clearance for me? Waterpump mount surface to rear body cross member... See photo.

Thanks in advance! PM me please.

mkingham 02-23-2010 01:27 PM

Hi rakednstretched, that is actually a photo of my car while I was setting the motor/tranny position. I'll grab the dimensions for you and post them tomorrow.

Mike

mkingham 02-24-2010 06:39 PM

dimensions

Here is a photo that shows the clearance. It is about 3.125 inches between the back of the block and the frame. I have a short 930 tranny, so I could not move the motor any further forward that what you see here. I would be curious to see the clearance that other LS powered 911's have.

The RH motor mounts allow a lot of movement front to back to accommodate different tranny/chassis combos.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1267065561.jpg

shanghai_todd 02-25-2010 02:30 AM

Yea, I would say 3.125 looks about right, I remember how close the 90 degree elbows come to the frame. Not much room at all and I am running a 915 tranny.

I have seen on other sites smaller adapter plates made for after market water pumps.

lin7310948 02-25-2010 02:59 AM

distance

if a person could reduce the size of the renegade water outlets and elbows to 1.5 inches would this allow a person to use a longbell 930 transaxlw rather than a shortbell one? in other words how much is trimmed off a long bell to convert the length to a shortbell?

mkingham 02-25-2010 07:08 AM

alternate water pump adapter

One option would be to take this Meziere Block Adapter (WP89U) and find a very low profile 90 elbow (threaded) or weld an elbow to it. You could easily save an inch over the RH setup.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1267110506.jpg

rakednstretched 02-25-2010 11:19 AM

I am just finishing my own block adapters... similar to RH but will have tig welded on barbs for hose and water will exit away from the rear crossmember. should allow and extra inch 30 to 35 mm. Will change hose routing some but not a big deal. Very simple to machine part... Thanks for the accurate confirmation!

rakednstretched 02-25-2010 11:22 AM

I would also be very interested in the Long case 930 answer! Some other PP members seem to say one inch...

Wow I can not believe it has been 1 year since my first posting of my build. Over 30K views and tons of knowledge and shared information.

As I sit here in Shanghai looking at the progress of of the builds from Rebel911, Mkingham and Mbaran I am starting to get motivated again and am now determined to get my LS1 conversion finished when I return in April :D

For those following the post and considering such a build or in the process of their own build below are some images not posted before that may help determine the level of difficulty.

I also must give credit to my master mechanic:

My Daughter Reena :D Notice the 12mm wrench in hand with grease and oil on her fingers and face, A proud moment of being a father but at the same time scary knowing that one day she will want a Porsche as well :(

Reminds me of my daughter, filipino (me) and the rest German/Irish, when she was that age with me wrenching on my black 74.

Keep the shotgun handy, dad.

Cheers,

Joe

looks great. Your car is so clean, you've motivated me to wash everything underneath once i pull the tranny and engine again this weekend.

and thanks for the exhaust pictures I was just starting to think about that.
