been just a bit slack the last week or so as i was waiting on news of the engine..the engine was dynoed today and hopefully will be shipped tomorrow from Mast Motorsports.. needless to say i am anxious to receive and get back to work...http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1297886710.jpg

carsonmx114 02-16-2011 12:25 PM

I think I can hear your transmission whimpering in fear...

lin7310948 02-17-2011 07:32 AM

the engine is crated and scheduled for shipment today..hope to receive by tuesday of next week. i removed the factory turbo tail this morning...man...those things are really heavy. i have a metal frame fiberglass top ducktail that i will most likely put on the car. personally the ducktail is my preference over any of the earlier tails. now what do i do about the porsche rear reflector?? with the lighter weight of the LS7 engine, removal of the turbo tail, and the removal of the oil tank, lines and thermostat i am hoping to reduce the rear weight of the car by at least 125 pounds. already have lexan rear window and quarter windows. probably will removed the sound pad in the rear as well....might actually reduce a few more pounds.

turbobrat930 02-17-2011 08:15 AM

Subscribed.... I have an LS-2 waiting to go into my 944....... Once I finish with my race 930

lin7310948 02-23-2011 12:50 AM

finally!

picked the motor up yesterday morning and uncrated...it was almost six weeks late due to the oil pan not being available..now back to work! note that the picture is the rear of the engine...the intake has been reversed..http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1298454557.jpg

lin7310948 02-24-2011 10:34 AM

got the motor and transaxle in place so that i can start on the headers...using Stainless Headers kit...mock up header kit that i will use to make a mock up headers. i will send this back to them and they will fabricate a set of stainless headers. i will probably use 1 3/4 tubing into 3 inch collectors. lots more to do...i am still hoping to run a ducktail instead of a turbo tail...but the Fast intake runners are longer and thus taller. i hope that there will be enough clearance at the front of the engine.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1298576036.jpg

lin7310948 02-24-2011 12:22 PM

i just placed the ducktail on the car and it seems to fit ok with plenty of clearance..it is so much lighter than the factory turbo tail. it is very good quality with a steel base and fiberglass top. it was made by a fellow pelican!

lin7310948 03-03-2011 04:00 AM

headers

spent the last few days trying to determine headers. i am using a Stainless Headers kit to prototype the headers. this kit is comprised of various components that allow one to mock up headers with the engine in place. this mock up is sent to Stainless Headers and they fabricate a very nice set of custom stainless headers in the desired tube size, etc. i am going to ask for 1 7/8 tubes with a 3 inch collector. space is fairly limited in the engine bay, primarily to leave room for the muffler length. i have not decided on the muffler but would like low restriction without too much noise. i did have to remove the electric water pump bracket from the Renegade Hybrids cradle and will mount the pump up on the engine compartment rail on a new bracket. i will snap a pic of the prototype headers maybe today..

lin7310948 03-03-2011 12:33 PM

finished up on the prototype headers this afternoon. i will refit one last time in the morning and UPS them to Stainless headers. a couple of pictures..the c0ollectors will be three inches not the inch and a half pictured.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1299187936.jpg

Brilliant solution to home designed/custom headers.

lin7310948 03-17-2011 11:34 AM

finished the header kit prototype and they have them at Stainless Headers...estimate 2=3 weeks to fabricate and return. as i stated earlier my air cleaner will be in the rear seat area along with the ECU and relays and fuse box for the Mast system. i will build a suitable enclose to house the air cleaner. this will be fed by Naca ducts from the quarter windows. this should provide a more direct air route into the Fast LSX 102R intake and mass air flow meter. the ambient air temperature should be much cooler as well. the wiring harness will also enter the engine compartment through the air box enclosure as well. i also removed the rear bumper shock mounting receivers as well...most have been 5-8 pounds of steel. i did this to allow more room for the muffler on each side. wont make a decision on the headerss to mufflers until i get the headers back,as a note i used a 4 inch 30 degree aluminum piece to clear the front engine compartment cross support. and i like it that there is not clutter on top of the engine.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1300390386.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1300390420.jpg

lin7310948 04-07-2011 01:44 PM

still awaiting the stainless headers from the fabricator...hopefully next week. about through with the engine compartment. should be rather un-encumbered compared to the turbo flat six..and much lighter. ordered R style hinges from TRE as i will run a ducktail and a couple of rear window straps to keep the lexan rear window in place.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1302212619.jpg

herman maire 04-07-2011 02:20 PM

Nice build.

Just wondering, Why dont you box in the filter in then have feed pipes run from the rear engine lid/spoiler . This way your not seeing pipes running around the cabin from the quarter windows..

carslutt 04-07-2011 02:34 PM

looks like your doing some good work. i told my wife id like to do an LS swap into my 911 and with out missing a beat she said, only if it has working AC........ haha....

lin7310948 04-07-2011 02:42 PM

herman, i will most likely run with a ducktail and not much to hook onto there. the air cleaner will be enclosed in an aluminum cover with 2 three inch ports. the tubing from the naca ducts in the quarter windows to the cover will only be 10 to 12 inches in lenght. the computer and the supporting relays and electrical hardware will be mounted in the rear firewall area as well...so the back seats will not be functional for seating..

lin7310948 04-10-2011 08:42 AM

removed the turbo tail and factory hinges and installed the ducktail using TRE 911R hinges. i put the turbo script back on just because it seemed more appropriate as the car was originally and is mostly still a 930 and it has plenty of horsepower. since i have lexan rear glass i also used TRE retention clips to keep the lexan rear window in place. most likely will mount an oil cooler ibetween the rear bumper and front of the engine in the area where there are slots. i have a space 24 inches long by 4 inches wide by 6 inches tall which should give me lots of latitude to size and place. the Mast Motorsports oil pan has two cast in ports for an oil cooler so the lines should be easy to run and very short. the authentic Ruf bumper only weighs a few pounds. i noticed that the rear of the car is noticeably higher. the LS7 as well as the ducktail probably net a minium of 75 pounds over the original turbo tail and motor.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1302453675.jpg

lin7310948 04-11-2011 11:38 AM

got the ecu mounted as well as the relays and electrical stuff in the rear seat area. also cut the rear package tray panel to fit around the air cleaner. still have to pretty that up a bit and then build the air cleaner cover. lots of little things to do while waiting on headers to be built. i also ordered a setrab oil cooler today..15 by 6 by 2 inches. i will locate it between the rear bumper and the front of the motor. the oil lines with thermostat will be about 24 inches to one port and 30 inches to the other.

lin7310948 04-12-2011 03:58 AM

rolled the car out this morning. i still have to install the exhaust system and oil cooler but the rear of the car is seeing about all the weight of the ls7 conversion. it is noticeably higher overall and much moreso in the rear. i am not especially fond of the side inserts at the rear wheels...any ideas? i am considering removing them and installing stainless mesh in the opening. i will use the same approach with the front air inlet and also will do the same with the fog light openings. i will however close fog light openings before i cover them. will be some trial and error to all that stuff.. how are you other LS conversion guys doing? i will try to load a before and after picture.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1302609362.jpg

stainless headers fabricated and to be shipped today. anxious to check the fit in a rather tight area... 1 7/8 inch tubing into 3 inch collector.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1302619047.jpg

Innovative... AND Well Done! I haven't seen that done before but thinking about it, I'm sure it will work very well.
Don't be surprised when people start copying your idea. ;)

Good luck with the build.

lin7310948 04-14-2011 11:35 AM

got my air box completed today. not particularly elegant but will do for now, i also ordered a lightweight interior from appbiz today. should neaten that area a bit and help remove a few pounds of weight.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1302809663.jpg

lin7310948 04-21-2011 10:34 AM

working on the exhaust this week. most likely will use Hushpower pro series mufflers. space is very tight and i hope to have drivers side fabbed up in a couple of days.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1303410833.jpg

carsonmx114 04-21-2011 05:41 PM

I'm in...

Picked up my LS1 last Sunday. Ordered my RH kit Wednesday. I can't wait to drive my car! I've had this thing since October of last year and the most I've done is sit in it and listen to the stereo.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1303435867.jpg

lin7310948 04-26-2011 06:08 AM

got the flowmaster hushpower pro series mufflers mounted and with hangers. still have to complete the tubing welds for the exhaust after the headers. the muffler housing is 6 by 16 inches with 3 in and 3inch out. should provide ample quieting of the exhaust without being restrictive. i did have to relocate the Mezziere electric water pump due to the headers. Renegade Hybrids incorporates a very nice mounting into their engine cradle but i had to nix that. most likely will mount the oil cooler between the front of the engine and the rear spoiler. there is plenty of room and should be ample air flow...fingers crossed. i will mount the thermostat to the cradle framework and the lines will be very short. still have to remove the engine and do a few more things in the engine compartment. but, the primary reason is to remove the 930 transaxle to send to Gary Fairbanks for rebuild... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1303826824.jpg

lin7310948 04-26-2011 12:27 PM

pulled the engine and transaxle out this afternoon. this is what the engine minus the wiring and fuel lines, etc. looks like as a package. talked to fairbanks about the transaxle refresh and hope to get it on the way tomorrow. really neat and lightweight package for 700 plus crank horsepower on 91-93 octane!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1303849586.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1303849631.jpg

lin7310948 04-28-2011 03:52 AM

got the transaxle boxed and delivered to the UPS store for shipping to Gary Fairbanks for rebuild. i was surprised that the transaxle minus the drive flanges, mounting carrier, and the clutch fork mechanism and of course trans oil only weighed 112 pounds boxed to ship. and i also discovered after years of shipping at this store that Triple A members get a 5 per cent discount...which amounted to $5.71 on the shipment which aint bad!!!

Very slick! Your car is coming along nicely. Gary Fairbanks is top notch guy you will be pleased.

I'm trying to keep my drive by wire setup. I re-ran and re-wrapped my harness keeping all the servo and data wires in the ecm to run it, but now that I have the manifold reversed I'm concerned that I don't have room for the throttle body against the firewall. Has anybody used this setup? I'm thinking of making a 180 pipe to reverse the throttlebody and position it on top of the engine. Any thoughts?

lin7310948 05-02-2011 07:19 AM

Renegade hybrids has an adaptor such as you are describing. it places the air cleaner back over the engine. i did not wish to do it as such so i cut a suitable hole in the firewall and put my air cleaner in the back seat area.

lin7310948 05-26-2011 01:12 PM

took a bit of a vacation but now back to the project. it is amazing how much time is involved especially when changing so many things. got the oil cooler and rear coolant lines in place. i am using a ruf yellowbird rear bumper/cover with slots and am hoping to have suitable air for the oil cooler mounted between the bumper cover and the engine cradle. the mast motorsports oil pan is made with the oil line attachments in place on the pan which makes it really easy to attch a cooler.. finger crossed on the oil cooler location. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1306444273.jpg

lin7310948 05-28-2011 10:29 AM

starting gauge wiring. per wrong information from mast regarding their ECU the Ecu does not provide a signal for oil temperature nor fuel pressure. Livorsi could not match the bezels on the two newly ordered gauges but they could replace the bezels on the other three gauges to be like the new ones...yeah confusing! so at least i have all the same bezel/trim on the gauges and matching red led backlighting. the two new gauges only have 180 degree sweep...not happy about that but what can you do. still got to wire the gauges but had the original plan worked all i would have to do is hook up 5 wires and plug everything thing together which would have been really nice and simple. oh well!! still have to find a suitable location for the GPS speedpmeter antenna...most likely centered on the package shelf in the rear. my rear window is lexan and should pose no problem for GPS signal. the speedometer and the tachometer have the ability to digitally display several functions..http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1306607313.jpg

lin7310948 06-01-2011 04:14 AM

have to run one 5/16s steam vent line to the filler neck and the engine compartment is finished...well maybe just a little tweeking here and there. everything is neat and rather simple in appearance...old school???http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1306930398.jpg

Facey 06-01-2011 09:11 AM

looks very clean indeed.

Is that engine really 700hp? not a typo for 400hp or something?

lin7310948 06-01-2011 09:39 AM

not a typo. the engine dyno chart is at the top of page 3..post #41.

bfunke 06-01-2011 03:39 PM

I'm sure it's tight underneath but have you thought of a cross-over between the headers and mufflers? Might help make a bit more power? We used to add that to our V-8s in the 60s and 70s.

lin7310948 06-01-2011 04:07 PM

yes i thought about that. but for now i am not planning on a crossover. i was hoping to have room for some of those fancy electric cutouts but they are probably out. might in the future attempt a crossover.

lin7310948 06-17-2011 03:34 AM

working from the rear of the car, i started replacing the original interior with a lightweight interior. still got to paint the GPS antenna and put the white signal wire into the wiring harness in the rear. after some discoussion with Livorsi i decided to mount the antenna in this location under the lexan rear window as opposed to under the sheet metal of the front compartment. still have a bit of tidying up on the rear. and, as i stated in an earlier post the air intake box is not very elegant but it is functional!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308310411.jpg

lin7310948 07-03-2011 05:37 AM

i have been busy with lots of small jobs and a couple of larger tasks. i finished inspecting, rebooting, and of course regreasing the joints and reinstalled on the axles. replaced the attaching bolts with the stage 8 locking bolt kit and reinstalled in the car. i got the radiator hoses run to the front. i put oil in the motor yesterday and just bumped the starter and the motor turned over a couple of times...making progress! since the mast motorsports uses a seperate wiring harness to and from the ecu there were several wiring things to deal with. and the livorsi gauges required major wiring behind the gauges to hook into the proper systems. the gauges are red backlighted and the digital readout portion of the gauges makes for an interesting dash. fans are working, electric water pump, and the fuel pump as well. i removed the original heater and air controls and radio and installed a rennline lower dash piece. this contributes to the overall very spartan interior. any ideas on something to place over the rennline emblem that says porsche...maybe custom made. i also ordered a leather redye kit for my somewhat faded fitti e3 steering wheel...that might be a good july fourth project. i most likely will put a dash cap on to eleminate the air vent on the dash...if they are available. i am working steadily but it does take some time and especially if you are picky!!

lin7310948 07-03-2011 01:09 PM

got the steering wheel refinished this afternoon. needs 48 hours to ccompletely dry. rather simple process and i was pleased with the initial results. hopefully will look the same in 48 hours..http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1309727297.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1309727322.jpg

lin7310948 07-04-2011 12:08 PM

cleaned a bit of dust ...many years of accumulation from beneath the dash and installed the driver side pedal board. got lucky i suppose as all i had to do was trim just a very small area to clear the drive by wire pedal. when i built the console on the front wall to mount the pedal arrangemnt onto i just figured that i would adapt the pedalboard as necessary. fortunate it seems!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1309810019.jpg
