Well, the auction is live over on Bringatrailer.com... I'm not able to post back, though. I don't know why....
One recurring theme is around roll centers and weight. So now that the motor is now commonly understood to weigh less than the flat 6, there's discussion that it raises the roll center at the back of the car due to the center of mass being higher on the v8 than the flat 6. This actually isn't true. The top of the heads sits about the same height as the flat 6. The engine hangs lower than the flat 6. And this is comparing it to a normally aspirated motor. A turbo motor with the intercooler set up way high under the wing must have a higher CG than the v8. It certainly does compared to a flat 6. There is stuff on the v8 that sticks up higher than the flat 6 but it's all plastic and doesn't have any real weight.

I don't think you'll find a buyer for that car in a week on BaT. In any engine-swapped car, the market of buyers becomes very narrow. Add to that the stigma of people who think the motor is the "soul" of a car, or that a brilliantly designed American V8 is somehow akin to a drunk NASCAR fan...it usually takes some time to find somehow who can appreciate the upsides over the lack of originality.
I'm surprised to see it for sale, as project builds such as these rarely recoup the costs that go in. I'm curious to see what the final price is, as I would trade my 3.6-swapped M491 coupe for it if it put a few bucks in my pocket. |

Well that's it. Car sold for $42,300. It's going to Palm Beach. Kinda cool that it'll be just up the road from Sebring.

Epilogue - While the auction was in process, one item that I had thought wouldn't get finished, got finished. So I installed it.
I was never happy with the Radiator Fill Tank that came from Renegade. It looked hokey to me. Couple that with the overflow tank and the whole left side of the car was a bundle of hoses and junk. Then, when i decided I didn't like venting the PCV to the atmosphere, the thought of adding a third tank - catch can - just pushed me over the edge. I had a friend build a single console that would mount on the right side of the engine. It would sit on the frame rail, incorporate the 3 tanks I needed into a single console. That would let me hide some of the hoses and clean up the mess. Here it is installed. ![]() Notice how clean the left side is. It also let me install a prop rod on that side. Here's a closeup of the tank. ![]() Also during the auction, I blew the high pressure side of the a/c because I didn't wire up the trinary switch. So I wired it in and got it recharged. In the auction description, you might also have noticed that I had a gauge problem. North Hollywood Speedometer replaced my oil tank level with a volt meter and grounded it wrong - only one gauge would work at a time - either the voltmeter or the fuel level. I sent it back to them, they fixed it and sent it back. I'll install that tomorrow and other than packing it, I think I've done as much as I'm going to do on it. The new owner is a new friend. Hopefully, he'll enjoy the car and take it to the next level. Hal

I received the car back in mid July, and it is beautiful. I proceeded to drive the vehicle immediately, as I had always wanted a Renegade converted 911. The car was pretty much all there as Hal had described it, the paint and interior were beautiful and the car started on the first crank off the transport truck. I drove it for about 3 miles and then flipped the switch to the cooling fans as I had been told to by Hal. The cooling fans were on manual switches in true racing fashion. The car's power-band is ridiculous, it comes on from 2k rpm on and the torque is strong and flat all the way to 6k rpm. There is no lag or flat spots on the power curve in any gear, unlike the factory 3.2L or even its 930 turbo counterpart.
After driving the car for a few exciting miles, I had to park it, and go back to my work routine until the weekend. When the weekend rolled around I drove the car about 20 minutes and realized a few things I could improve on. One, the car ran rather warm 218-230F depending on RPM and the use of the AC. This to me was a bit of a concern as I wanted an NA car that I could drive hard, without having to worry about over-heating. I also live in a home with an inclined driveway and realize quickly that the ebrake needed some adjusting. Although leaving it in gear works, the safety of the ebrake is desirable to me. Lastly, the car would stall on decel when coming to a stop, whether in gear or out. Causing me to come to a stop and re-start several times. So as with any project I had my first list: 1. test/inspect cooling system/ change thermostat 2. adjust ebrake (after talking to Hal the pads were new so no biggie there) 3. Get the car re-tuned for stalling , and put it on the dyno to put to bed what RWHP a stock LS1 with headers and a cold air intake will make ( a debate in the comments section during the BAT auction) I will continue to update this vehicle history as time allows, until I catch up with where I am at with the car currently. A few posts back says the LS is happy at 240°F. Might be fine in that range, if it's isn't going over. Dunno.
Any surprises? I still have a V8 conversion in the back of my mind. |
