Question Transmission options / V8 914

My car is going to be light and have loads of HP and torque. I would really like to run an auto transmission. I get the fun of shifting and its a blast but I've been driving a auto for some time and its not bad. This car being set up with a nasty LSx engine is surely going to be a handful. I know many 911s came with autos and they carry loads of HP so surely it would hold up with such a light car. Anyone have any info regarding a auto that I might be able to use ? I also don't wish to spend 10k on a trans. They are computer controlled units and that's also a issue. I really don't think there's a hole lot going on computer wise as to not be able to at least get the car to shift. I'm a tune up and driveability tech and get all the computer control stuff well.

I think one of the big top speed events was won by a 911 a few years back using an auto trans as well.

I was hoping to get some input but auto transmissions are real technical and specialized.

Well , most 914 owners have 2 legs they can use
There is a tread about using an Audi 5000 trans on 914world, and I believe someone used a Boxster tiptronic behind a 3.2. At your power level, most people would use an inverted G50

I don't know of anyone who has gone with an auto box for a high-powered motor. I am sure there are ones out there that could be made to work, but you would probably be blazing your own trail.

The 911 gearboxes spin the "wrong way" for use in a 914. I believe that it is non-trivial to flip their ring and pinion gear, requiring at least a fair amount of machining. You can get a similar effect by flipping the whole transmission upside down, but then you have to deal with the fluid not being where you want it to be and so on.

You may be able to make a 928 gearbox work, but it will require fabrication and work. The newer Vettes with transaxles might be made to work as well. The Boxster trans should fit reasonably, but you still have to fabricate a mount, work out where the starter goes (because it's on the engine side), and of course control it.

I've read speculation about using a Subaru gearbox, either from a FWD Scooby or from an AWD one with the transfer case locked.

.... Wait a minute, I just remembered something. There was someone who, I think, used a Toronado transmission coupled to an SBC. It was only a two- or three-speed, but it was simple and could hold up to a V8 at least reasonably well, But I don't remember seeing any photos of the setup.

It is quite unusual, though. Very few automatic transmissions have gone in 914s at all through the years.

I have done no research on this, but

I see guys with the sandrails running hot 500hp LS V-8's running a tranny called a Mendola (I hope I spelled it right). Might be worth checking out!

Subaru 2WD Conversion Kit - Bremar Automotion this is how I'd try to do it..... It might take a really built Subaru auto trans to do it maybe find an auto wrx trans and beef it up..... Good luck, and best wishes, I like the end goal, as its similar to mine....

Mendeola. About $8,000-12,000. There's others out there similar, Fortin, Hewland, etc. but these are manual trans. though.

Just about any year FWD auto Audi V6 or V8 can handle this type of power and abuse of an LS1.

It's manual Audi FWD, but you get the idea:

The MR2 uses an engine and transmission that are mounted left-to-right, like most FWD cars have. The 914 uses a setup that is longitudinal, with the engine sitting in front of the transmission.

The transmissions usually care a whole lot about which way they are oriented in the chassis, so I think the MR2-type setup would be out.

the way a toyota engine fits in an mr2 has nothing to do with a v8 powered 914 with auto trans my point was the fwd cadallic auto trans mission may be an option for a ls engine in a 914 or the northstar and trans might work out well too yhe northstar is a pretty small engine making 300 plus hp stock
