help needed determining value of 912
Hi, I'm going to look at a 1966 912 tomorrow. The owner states no motor/interior. Body work has been finished about 15-20 years ago and is in primer. It has rear flares added along with converting the rear to look like an 80's SC. It also is convertible. I'm guessing it was originally a targa. So its a rolling shell without "rot". I'm just trying to gauge some sort of value. (I know its hard without seeing it)

What are you going to use it for? How much would you pay for a roller coupe or targa? How much will you be "undoing" ? Its a hodgepodge for sure. I have no idea what a 912 vin roller runs these days, but maybe $1500?

What is your goal in purchasing this roller? You'll end up spending $25k to make it a daily driver.

I'm assuming it needs everything. $25K is $15K too low IMO.

I was wondering how a roller turns into a daily driver for 25k as well. These are all value traps as far as I’m concerned. It’ll cost more getting it road worthy than to just buy one that already is road worthy, yet the allure of buying it so cheap is what sucks people in to take on the project. It’s for one that’s a glutton for punishment, that’s for sure.

911dreams, as others have alluded to, this is likely to end in tears.
If all the underpinnings are there; brakes, suspension, etc, he will get $5k for it. The only way this works out somewhat financially sound is if you have a complete running rust bucket to build onto it. I keep hoping to stumble onto the right roller. I’ve got a 75 targa that would be a great donor car. The chassis is too far gone to bother fixing but she runs like a top.

The car was trashed. The convertible conversion was an embarrassment and the body work was done poorly. I passed on the car because I didn’t want to insult him. I probably would have bought it just to part it out which would barely be worth it

Good call. Unless you’re a salvage yard these are rarely worth your time, even for parts, and they carry negative value in terms of a restoration project. Buy one that runs and be thankful you dodged a headache.
