'74 RSR look budget track car
Guys, at the risk of drawing too much overt attention to this find, what do you'll think of this nice "Mexican Blue" (repainted) RSR look "budget" track car for 10k? I guess the bumpers, flares and ducktails are made of fiberblass--is that good or bad? This is a good example of how a nice color and a recent paint job can really make a car sizzle. The pics show the interior as a little wanting, I guess it needs some carpet, a matching racing seat, but at least the dash isn't cracked. Engine is apparently rebuilt and "sounds incredible" - too bad there is no documentation on the rebuild. Sound like a fun toy for someon like me on a budget and it's a 74 (so no smog) to boot. Is this one of those "Oh know! The flipper is going to beat me to it" deals or one of those nice but keep looking deals? I guess time will tell. Sounds like the seller is hobbyist enthusiast himself.

Techweenie has been around Pelican for a long time, and I think he is a good guy. Regardless of his reputation I would suggest a PPI (pre purchase inspection), as I am sure he would too. I think if you like the look of the flares bolted on, and the other modifications it is not a terrible deal. Also notice that the meeting between the flared fender and the rear bumper appear to have a bit of a gap on the drivers side. There is no mention of the mileage, the transmission, accident history of the car. Maybe they are non-issues but I would ask tech about that. I would want the 7:31 ring and pinion transmission which is what should be stock on a '74. It will help make the 2.7L engine a lot.
I would be tentative about an undocumented 2.7L engine. They are notorious for having problems that are expensive to fix correctly durring a rebuild. If the rebuild was done correctly you could have a great motor on your hands, if it was done half baked you could have a problem down the road. If it proved to be a strong engine you could make it a really fun car with that tec-1 and some webers (or PMO's). The emissions exemption is nice for californians. How I would look at the car. You have a 1974 911, 2.7L engine with undocumented rebuild, unknown condition of transmission, extremely stripped out interior, apparently there are some wiring bugs that need to be fixed, it sounds like it is going to need tires soon, and the fiberglass add ons look OK but not great. I'd say at 10400 you are paying pretty much for a mid year in rough shape. Now if what you want is essentially a track only car that you can play with and modify as you play it is a pretty good deal, particularly because you are not limited by emissions. It depends on what you want to use the car for. In its current condition it looks like a track oriented car that can go on the street. Not a street car that can occasionally go on the track. My preference is the latter of those two, but maybe yours is the opposite. I think what matters is what YOU want out of your 911. I just want to stess that all I know about this car is what Tech documented in his advertisement. I am not an expert on it, the 2.7L in his car could be an absolute monster. I'm just mentioning where my concerns would be if I were in the market for the car. Tech might be able to clear up all of my concerns and make 10400 the deal of the century. Rich

Unless documentation can be found on the rebuild and hopefully it comes up with no tranny problems or accident history.
but for a track orientated car seems like an amazing start. nice looking flares, wicked paint choice, yes it needs an RS carpet set, and 2 new seats, and i'm sure there's another 1000 to spend on little things, but 10 400 is asking. Have a PPI done, everything turns out to be the way he says it is, buy a turbo kit from mb911, get some lidnsey fuch's.... and..... u have an amazing car that most of us would be jealous of. the fiberglass work looks pretty good IMO, and the light weight is a huge plus. cheers Nick

I can't criticize anything said here. The car is aggressively priced because the engine is a bit of an unknown. I bought the drivetrain from a fellow Pelican a couple years back, and he had no documentation at all. I had a discussion a while back with someone who wanted to buy the car less engine, and I'm certainly open to that. 2.7s can suprise you -- and not in a good way. But this engine is pretty impressive. I'm nearby TRE, and they know the car -- they helped me diagnose the timing bounce. But I'm also near TLG and a couple of other mechanics if anyone wants to PPI it. I have about 70% of the parts to put a black interior in the car, if someone doesn't want it quite so "raw." EDIT: let me add that the chassis also came from a Pelicanhead contact. The car had been a highly competitive autocrosser up in Santa Barbara until the owner blew up the engine and his (expecting) wife said "no more."

We've seen the car and for the money, its a decent start towards a fun track toy. Not that much left to be done to start playing with it. What is a plus is that with this board most of the "to-do's" can be done on your own.
Some one is going to get a good value for $$ spent
