Would you sell this car? (1973 coupe)
I love driving the "Hooligan", but it spends way too much time sitting in the corner of the garage under a cover.
![]() The basics: 1973 coupe, powered by a 3.2. 7:31 ring & pinion, Quaife limited slip. Carrera flares, 935-style mirrors, 7 & 9 x 16 Fuchs. 23/31mm Torsion bars. OMP race seats with 5-point harnesses. SSI headers, Triad-West sport muffler. Some of the interior is still stored in boxes. While I have the original door panels and pockets, my plan has been for the RS-style panels. Likewise, the back seats have not been re-installed, as I intend on an RS America parcel shelf instead. Every time I drive it, I think I need to more often, then it sits again for too long. I know now is not the best time to sell anything, but any opinions on what this weird conglomeration of parts is worth? |

If you can afford to keep it, then keep it. Just because you don't drive it everyday doesn't mean it should be sold. My dad has owned his 914-6 since 1970. He doesn't drive it everyday. Heck, not sure he drove it more than twice a year for while. But he kept it.. because he love's it. If you love it.. keep it. If you need to sell to free up the money, then well, then sell it.
She looks like a lot of fun.. but you will miss it once it sells.

I also have a 73 coupe with a 3.2. Mine is still a narrow body. I don't drive mine a lot, but I alway's enjoy it when I do. With the 3.2 it always starts right up and has never given me any trouble. I have though about selling mine a time or two, but I don't need the money at this time. It doesn't cost much and I figure the best way to get my money out of it is to keep it and drive it. Even if it takes me years.
As other's have said, do you need the money now? What do you think you could get for it and what would you do with the money? As to what its worth, I really don't know. I had my 73 for sale listed here awhile back, with the 2.4 motor, for 20K and had no interest. So I put in the 3.2 and havn't looked back. I'm sure you will get offers in the 10k-15k range, there are those trying to get lucky. But the truth is, like mine , it's a longhood hot rod , thus limited amount of buyers. My wild ass guess is 17k-25k. You might as well keep it.

I'd trade you my unmolested Euro '68 911T for it.

I am selling that car -- or my version of it ('72 with 3.2). I need the money for my startup, otherwise would never consider selling. What's the cost of keeping it vs. the direct cost of insurance and the opportunity cost of $30K or so, tied up? Not a lot, I suspect.
Think of the sorting it took to get the car to where it is. I vote: keep it.

I'd guess mid 20's. Flared and 3.2'd is, IMO, a reduction in value. Not saying I wouldn't own one or enjoy driving it...but I wouldn't pay as much for the opportunity vs. an original narrow car in the same condition w/ a good and correct sized motor.

Thanks for the comments, guys.
I know as a general rule, an original example is worth more than a modified car. This car was purchased after it had a minor engine fire, so it was a perfect candidate to toss the original whimpy 2.4. The engine, wiring harness, flares, aluminum banana arms, and a bunch of other bits & pieces came from a pristine 1987 Targa that got hit hard in the nose. Fun project. Being that I saved this car from going to a wrecking yard, I didn't mind not keeping it original. Nice offer to trade for the '68, but after driving a long-hood with this horsepower to weight ratio, it would be tough to go back to a stock car. Money may play into this a bit. Our income has been down, but outside of a very small mortgage on our house, we are debt-free, so overall we're in pretty good shape. My 15-year-old daughter says "It's not for sale!" as she thinks she needs to show up for driver's ed with it! My wife has never driven it (She's kinda afraid of the lightweight flywheel), but she too thinks we should keep it, even though it's usually just a lump under a cover in the garage. It's truly a great car, but I have enough toys. Not sure I'd miss it too much if it were gone. |

Well, that can be debatable to given who's interested and why. Before the "stock/original is better craze" of the last few years, a well sorted modified long hood was all the rage. I've owned dozens of 911's at this poit and the ones dearest to my hard wee the modded ones.. light weight w/a fat motor and there was always someone waiting to purchase it. Don't get me wrong, and no dis-respect to the original and unmodded crew as I appreciate those as well, they just ain't my cup of tea. I have a car similar to your hooligan but based on an S, and as I like to say.. it was cut before anyone gave a damn!! I've owned it since 90, it survived the divorce, and many other cars have come and gone before and after.. yet I hold this one near and dear.. oh and it's in parts right now! I have another car that I don't get to drive often.. it stays covered and is driven little, mainly based on time, destination, and event. I've thought of selling it a few times but just can't bring my self to do so because as someone said already.. you'll regret it if you do! Oh, and what a great wife and daughter you have. If the girls want to keep it, money ain't the issue.. then stay where you're at! ![]() P-

Dantilla,
It is a lovely car and the large majority of Pelicans would be ecstatic to own it. Why can't you make a point of driving it more often? Unless your commute is nasty stop and go, I would think you could find a day or two each week to exercise "Hooligan." Keep it. It is killer. Larry |
