Bummer. Sorry for your loss. Head over to Rennlist.com. They have a bunch of threads and expert opinions regarding IMS bearing failures...You can sell the car without a engine but don't expect much.

Unfortunately there's not a ton of value in a non-S 997.1 roller....I'd bet a dismantler would give you $8k, with retail value probably around $17K depending on options (but it will take a long time to sell off). The $11k 3.6 m96 motors are ebay specials and probably have 100k miles on them. They are realistically $14k motors (for decent ones) plus install. Once a shop finds out your core is IMS related they won't offer you dick for it. Do you race? Best, and most non-nauseating path for you would be use it as a base for that race car you've always wanted |

Post it on racing sites such as Racing junk Someone building a dedicate track car or swap would be your target audience.
That sucks!! |

I'm curious - any particular cause to explain the IMS bearing going bad? Did you track the car, AX perhaps?

I always thought that if the bearing didn't fail early they rarely failed. I haven't heard about many 78k mile cars throwing a bearing.

Guys like me that rebuild cars all the time would buy it. To me, if its in nice shape, it has at least some value. Dump that turd engine, put in a 4.0, away we go.
The problem is now your are buying a car with no motor. So in my book, sub 10K value. |

I'd say 8-10K for a roller, if it's in good shape.
Do the renegade V8 swap and just drive it... Or find a cheap 996 and swap the engine, then sell the 996 as a roller.

Three choices really:
- Sell it as a roller, walk away and take the hit. - Source an engine from a legit dismantler like Oklahoma Foreign (not ebay) and replace. - Go big and drop 25k on a 4.2L from Vision or other legit engine builder. If it were a 993 most here would almost certainly invest in the quality fresh motor at 25k and just consider it part of the cost of Porsche ownership.

Looks like you can buy an engine for $13k.
What would installation be? $3000?

Porsche really screwed up on some of these, I'm not sure if anybody knows the exact issues (why some fail at low mileage but most don't). One of my engineer friends thought it was because the bearings were installed improperly at the factory (slightly off center), and that is why most failed at such low mileage. I think the failure rate was estimated at 13% or so. I have heard of a few at 50k+ miles. Sorry about your loss, I really hate these stories. If you really liked the car I would try to save it, Porsche should step up and sell replacement engines at cost to owners when the IMS let go - I don't care how many years later, that's crap engineering somewhere, 13% is unaccepteble... |

In post number six, the OP said that he did not want to spend any more money on the car, so doesn't that mean all the "build this, that or the other out of it / put engine x, y or z in it" suggestions are not on the table for him (unless any of those builds are free
