Cool Engine dropped

Took my engine out today

The plan is new clutch, complete exhaust renewal and a good clean up and repaint tinware.

I'm not looking to powdercoat anything but I want to get it nice and shiny new looking.

OK I'm going back out there now to get that g/box off and attempt the exhausts.

more pictures of oily bits later

hello 911MOT

good work that man - is yr garage only 1 car long too?

I wish I had known you were pulling your engine as I would have come and give you a hand - I only lve down the road in Reading! I was hoping to drop mine soon and it would have helped to see how it all happens and I could have helped a bit too im sure.

Let me know if you need an extra pair of hands and keep us posted on progress and discoverys

good luck

I'm always envious of your cottage industry and craftsmanship of old world art and skill. I've never been jealous of your garages, VAT, or gas prices .

Nice job and it is brave in a one car this time of year.

Congrats!!!

I know most US people see that as a small garage, but I'm sure that Bernie (einreb on this board) would kill for a garage that spacious!

Or the rust and grime you seem to pick up on your engines! YIKES! A good cleaning will be in order and more than necessary. Good job!

Thanks for all your comments. Getting it out was the easy bit.
There's not much room but its enough. Just. I kept banging my head on the hoist.
Porsche don't seem to have provided much in the way of lifting eyes so I had to improvise here and there. Two of the exhaust studs snapped so I will have to take it to work for some heating. I am thinking about the valve guides too but there's no smoke or oil loss that I've noticed and I really hadn't planned for that much time off the road. Slowly approaching 110k. I'll get a better idea when the exchangers are off.

Next day

Man, even the engine tin on the cylinders is rusty! Do you get a lot of salt on the road, or is it just the constant rain?

I would think that head studs snap more likely in your climate? Any experience with friends having problems?

110k isn't time to do anything to the heads, unless you have oil consumption / smoke.

I am not surprised that some of the exhaust nuts wouldn't budge. Do a search, there is a bunch of cool ways to cure that SNAFU. I think people make drilling fixtures and you can even electrical discharge machine (EDM) them out, if you want to get fancy.

Take care, George

Congratulations on taking on such a reasonably big project at home! I'm sure it will all look and sound great when its finished.

One comment though, I think you'd be better off getting the tinware powdercoated. Its not expensive (well at least not here in Aus - $80 for the lot including the fan and housing), has a much better finish and I think it would also stand up to the heat, salt and moisture much better. If you are going to do the fan and fan housing, then I would definitely say powder coating is the only way to go.

Not much I can do until the engine stand gets here Thursday. Then I can turn it upside down and apply heat to the exhaust nuts.
In the meantime I made some blanking plugs so I can pressure clean it.

Any comments on this oil on cylinder 1?

Crankshaft oil seals on order.
As for the exhaust I was going to go for the complete SS system from design911 but I stumbled across these guys:
http://www.haywardandscott.co.uk/case2.htm
a vid clip of their system (3.4mb) http://www.haywardandscott.co.uk/downloads/Hayward_Scott_Exhaust.mpg

Not sure if I like the exit pipes but it sure sounds nice
