Is this old Momo Prototipo worth anything?

Or worth restoring for that matter? Found it in the trunk of one of my uncles old Volvo's. Made in Italy and M20340 are printed on the back and it's 370mm, if that means anything.

Thanks
Kevin

What is the outer dimension? And is there a date stamp? To some people it might be worth something restored as a "Period Correct" aftermarket item.

If it is a 370mm and you are taking offers I can definitely beat the last one....I'll give you 15 USD.

Shane

An old prototipo that is non-dished with smooth leather (as opposed to the newer pebbled leather) is very desirable. Patina is a bonus.

Ok, i just measured it, it is 370mm. I couldn't find any date stampings on it anywhere. I'm not really interested in selling it, I was just wondering if it was worth restoring. You can buy them brand new for $200. I do remember reading somewhere that the 370mm versions were quite desirable because they are larger and don't block the gauges as much, am I wrong? This wheel has a slight dish, maybe 3/4 of an inch. Is it even possible to fix this wheel? If so how would I go about doing this?

Thanks
Kevin

Kevin I forgot to mention size. 370 is good for the reason you mentioned. I read on the ESREG that the 370mm Protos are going to be reproduced.
Personally, if you could get this recovered by somebody like ClassicoWheel or Autobahn Interiors for around $200 in smooth rich black leather I would restore it.
The new $200 Protos are nice but there is no substitute for an old wheel.

Bob, thats what I was thinking. You can't reproduce patina. Is there any one in Canada that can refinish this wheel for me? The problem with sending it to someone in the US to refinish it for me is that I'll have to pay taxes on it when it comes back across the border!! Is it possible for me to do this myself? I have access to an industrial sewing machine.

Thanks
Kevin

Thanks for the link Michael, I really like how his wheel turned out, the hand stitched look is very cool!! At first I thought you were going to link me to the leather boot wheel recover I think I am going to attempt this!!

Thanks
Kevin

370mm is definitely the way to go. Mine has a date stamp on the back.

Here is a link;

Is this a 911R Steering Wheel?

Excellent score! I'd take that wheel over a new proto.

I stripped the leather off the wheel today, the foam is in good shape. I looked the wheel over for a date stamp again and could find nothing. I am going to buy some leather in the next few days and try to recover this thing. It will be nice to have a cool wheel and still be able to see my gauges

Kevin

This site list it as an option so the model # seems to make it authentic and I would guess probably a 67-72 manufacture date.

www.intermeccanica.org/publications/manual/Manual.htm

I bet you have a treasure there to the right person, probably you are the right person, great find.

I paid 82$ for mine.

snbush67, the link doesn't work. I found the main site but I can't find the info you referenced too, but if it's period correct for '67-'72 then I might be able to get my collector insurance and be able to use this wheel. As long as I can prove that it was an aftermarket option in '69...

I think that would be a later version of the Prototipo, as up thru at least 1972 they were still flat as seen in this period ad.

That is still a nice find and worth the effort to recover.
