Bill,
If you don't mind, what's the cost for doing the gear change? I'm starting to track the car and I've heard it makes a big difference in quickness.

I have thought and thought about this. I was dead-set on a 993TT, but my '95 NA is such an awesome car, I can't justify selling it and spending the delta on a Turbo right now. I'm almost hoping my tranny goes out!
Bill - did you do the regear yourself? I have rebuilt a couple 915s (930 engines have a way of making 915 rebuilds appear on the "routine maintenance" list), and am curious how much more difficult the 6-speed G50 is to service. Colin

I had been planning on buying GT gears and regearing my stock box. The early '95s are a good place to start because they have the separate 2nd gear like the RS and Cup trans.
I had even purchased a GT 40/60 LSD for it. Then I got a killer deal on a G50/30 Cup trans. It came w/ the exact gear stack that I had spent all winter figuring out. Steel syncros Porsche MS 40/65 lsd, Just freshened up by Rick Deman. Leland also got a killer deal when Chris C. rebuilt his box out of leftover parts, similar gearing. GT gears go for ~$800/set, the thing that is a killer is things like the second gear steel syncros @~ $1600/per, Guard 40/60 lsd ~$2200/per, most people stay w/ the brass stockers Start saving your pennies guys, but believe me it is worth it. Totally transforms the car. I can't believe that they didn't come this way out of the box. Another alternative that Matteo took for his hotrod is a factory rebuilt g50/31 993RS box, gearing is not quite so good but most of the rest of the parts are there, w/ a factory warranty @~$5700/per exchange(this is from my poor memory of quotes back in Feb)

Bill speakith the truth, brothers.
You will not believe how much more fun it is to drive one of these cars with better gears. I'm glad to hear you love it, Bill!

What exactly does the regearing give you in terms of results?
I've noticed that my 993 is OK to drive in 3rd and 4th gear but anything higher than that will get me an amazing ticket..

A stock 993 gearbox(as with all 911/964 US gearboxes since~1975) are geared for emissions and fuel economy, they are not geared for sport.
Here is a comparison of stock US gearing, RS gearing and Cup gearing ![]() Even though much lower and closer together the G50/30 Cup gearing is still very useable on the street. ~85mph @ 3400rpm

Not all 95's have a seperate 2nd gear. Mine is a late build and had 2nd splined to the main shaft (like 1st). It cost about another $1k to change it out in the rebuild. I estimate the charges as: 5x$1k for gears, $2k for synchro's and $2k for a race LSD. So, $9k in parts and you still need to pay for labor or DIY. It's not cheap, but it makes a difference. If you haven't already done it, you really should do the LWF and clutch at the same time (another $2k for parts) as you already are paying for a big part of the labor in that job.

Call Chris Cervelli at Premier Motorsports... He built my gearbox for $3000. He gave me a credit for my old gearbox.
I love it!

I did a lot of shopping, the best deal is the one that Matteo took for his, a factory rebuilt g50/31 sold thru Porsche NA just a tad under $6k w/ an exchnge trans. The actual price wil vary by the exchange. There are private deals to be had if you are patien and diligent. Carquip has a g50/30 like mine for ~$10k

Wow, I didn't really realize how well I made out. I know he used PMS steel synchros that were used as well as one or two of the gears. I guess I just didn't realize just how cheap I came out.
It'd still be worth it even if I had payed double.

Now in 993 land ...

All sounds great, except for the $. How practical is getting a used unit from the Vaterland with the ROW gearing?

Here is a possibility for you, especially considering your location.
TRG posted this w/ regards to a GT3 trans, but a 993 G50/20 should be comparable Option 1 Install existing 5th gear into 6th gear position and replace 3,4,5th with aftermarket gears. Aftermarket gears are available in race finish; normal usage noise will be more audible than that of the stock Porsche street car gears. While 3-5 will sometimes exhibit a whine or hum, the 6th gear will remain quiet for top gear freeway driving and fuel saving cruising. Re-Gearing Top Speed Chart Gear MPH 6 171.8 5 146.3 4 121.9 3 101.1 2 79.6 1 45 $3900, includes parts and labor. May require shipping charges. and yes, g50/31, /32 and/21 are available periodically through the dealer network. I know 5 or 6 that have purchased them this way. The most recent was a month ago where a /32 cost ~$12612, around 6 months ago /31s were ~$6000, less the core charge of course.
