3.2 Idle Adjust
Maybe someone can correct what I'm doing.
To set the idle on a 3.2 you should disconnect the ICV and tweak the idle screw on the left below. Idle should be about 850 rpm I think? And the screw on the right is for.....? ![]() |

The screw on the right in your photo (the one furthest from the return spring) is the idle adjustment screw.
I'm not really sure what the little screw on the left side of your photo is without looking at my Bently manual (which is at home - 450 miles away from me right now). |

When setting the idle you need to do the jumper wire. You have to remove the cover next to the coil. There are 5 holes. You put a jumper wire across two of them but I don't remember which ones. You will need to do a search on this. I printed it out when I set mine.

This thread has a pic of the test port that you need to use the jumper wire from B to C.
What is a jumper? The port is under the cover next to the coil that is secured with a wing nut.

Then I guess the screw on the left is to adjust the idle switch and make sure it switches on.
So you adjust the left screw to make sure the idle switch is closed in idle. Which you can check via this link: idle adjust Then you instal the jumper and set the idle via the screw on the right to about 850 rpm. And I think I read that according to John Walker it might take a few tries with the jumper until the idle stays at 850 with the jumper in and with it out. On the continuing education of moi, where is the mixture adjusted? Not that I would play with that.

On the underside of the Air Flow Meter (that aluminum box attached to the air filter), you'll find a small hole. In that hole will be a small allen-head screw, iirc. That screw should not be touched unless you have a Gas Analyzer and experience with that adjustment (or you'll really mess it up).

I promise not to touch it without a Gunsen sniffer. Thanks.

I am sorry to ask my question below someone else however this post has a picture and I have a similiar problem.
I also have a 85 3.2 and it will idle around 900 then drop and run rough. I have played with the hex nut idle adjustment but I have not put a jumper anywhere as stated above. It does make a difference but still not a steady idle. Any suggestions and also please decsribe in detail where this socket that we need to use the jumper on is and will that help me get a steady idle. Thanks to you all for your time and helping a novice drive the best car in the world and be apart of this great community. Best regards, Daniel Womack Booney1golf 85 911 Carrera Targa |
