Cylinder honing - regarding ccypher's post

Been reading some old posts and such about Alusil cylinders and such.
One thing I question... I'm getting the impression that a bad cylinder can be replaced...got this from a 911 thread from 03 . Can 944 cylinders also be replaced?

Second thing...I was loking through the Pelican parts list at piston and such and came across this:

Rebuilding your engine is a process that should be done right. For the most reliable of rebuilds, replace your pistons with new ones. If you are reusing your old ones, make sure that you have them checked at a good machine shop to make sure that the ring grooves are not worn. Also, the inside of the bores should be honed. Failure to do so may result in a new set of rings not seating properly.

So...why does it say to hone them?
Maybe Pelican should change that...it could confuse someone...

Now I want an an engine I can tear up.

No, 944 cylinders cannot be replaced. Cylinders on a 911 are separate pieces

Well that sucks. So what happens when one of our cylinders gets scarred? Trashed block, I suppose?

If the scratch or gouge is shallow enough, you can get it bored and retreated.

Too deep - yes, the block is trashed.

Now, someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I remember reading that particular oversized pistons (Porsche stock) were of the same weight. So is it plausable that if you only have one bad bore to get away with buying one piston and doing it???? I know, backyard at it's very best.

You are correct, that is possible. Unfortunately, they only gave you a maximum of 1mm to work with, If you had a scratch greated than 0.5mm deep, you were out of luck.

damn.. 0.5mm seems like such a tiny amount.. you'd never think it'd really affect anything.

Here's a photo of the single most expensive piece of metal on a 944

I could have sworn I heard of some of the racers putting sleeves in these motors. Anyone heard about that? I wouldn' think it would be very long lived, compared to the silicon cyllinder bores.

Yes, some have sleeved these. I don't know what type of sleeve etc. In fact I.ve wondered if Devek actually takes a 3.0 litre block and sleeves it down to 2.7 (meaning thicker walls) in order for the block to handle the high boost????

Any thoughts???

Don Istook in Ft. Worth resleeves if the bore is scratched. (817) 332-6547

If you don't know who Don Istook is, he's been racing Porsches for 30+ years, was racing 944s when only a small handful of people in this country actually even owned them. He also owns an Audi S4 Grand Am Cup team.

No.......I think it is more, how much money do you want to spend, and where and WHAT do you want to end up with.
