Synthetic Oil......opinions and testing
Open discussion, thought I'd toss out a few data points as our 930s are very tough on oil....
Friend is a chemical engineer and does not appreciate the Mobil 1 PR machine. Feels that Redline is the best synthetic oil available: > redline is expensive and you get what you pay for. > > if you look at the HTHS specs (high temperature, high shear) > nothing compares to redline. this is the best indicator of how > well an oil can stand up to a high revving turbo engine. > > if you look at the flash point, the redline is also higher > than just about everything else.. this is the temperature > where the oil vaporizes. > > mobil 1's numbers are going downhill and people have > discovered (from the material data safety sheet) that > they have started to put in cheaper dino based ingredients > compared to what their original formula was.. this is > not information that marketeers can spin.. they have to > say what the oil comprises of. > > there was a huge controversy at the oil geek web site > over mobil 1.. and mobil has been very evasive > to inquiries. > > also, people have sent used mobil 1 for analysis and > have found that they don't hold up as well either. > the M1 0W-40 is pretty bad, it degrades after just > 5000 miles to a 0W-30 and will no longer be > adequate for a turbo engine. > > let me know if you need more info...

*****, that's scarey stuff! I've been using the M1 5W-50 oil in my car. Any thoughts/feedback on that oil?

Ok, how many people are gonna leave their oil in the car for 5000 miles anyway???
I do good if my oil stays in the car for 800 miles, much less 5000.... But I've stuck with Kendall....

I think Castrol has really stepped to the plate on their Syntec Synthetic and synthetic blends. I used both in my in 930 and Audi Quattro and they have held up remarkably well. Change the oil in the Audi every 2 months and the 930 twice a year.

Mobil 1 doesn't use PAO as a base for it's synthetic oil in USA, as far as I know. I guess that doesn't make it a synthetic oil anymore.
Anyway, todays oils are much better than oils that were around when theese cars were sold anyway. I have good expirience with Shell Helix.

Brian, I agree the 5,000 mile thing doesn't - and shouldn't apply to us.
I'd still venture to go on a limb and say that Mobil 1 is probably a better choice than a pure natural oil for a 930 that sees hard use. But there appear to be beter choices in synthetics This is a bit telling, however: > mobil 1's numbers are going downhill and people have > discovered (from the material data safety sheet) that > they have started to put in cheaper dino based ingredients > compared to what their original formula was.. this is > not information that marketeers can spin.. they have to > say what the oil comprises of. No doubt. Next thing ya know we'll have lengthy discussions about an intercooler or something.

Reply from Mobil 1 states they do use the PAO as a base (?)
(I'm not that knowledgeable about the in-depth tech oil stuff.) The people on the oilguys site are a typical group of internet chatters...kinda like another site we know. There are a few great ones on there - just takes time.... Me personally? Mobil 1 is fine as far as I can tell. I change it quite often due to frequent track use AND due to the fact that I can only get about 1/2 the oil out per oil change. Lots remains in the 3 oil coolers and lines. Plus I have a chitload of previously purchased M1 in the shop ![]()

switched from Mobile One to Royal Purple XPR 20/50, saw a real world 12 to 15 degree decrease in oil temperature

my only guess is that it absorbs heat better and moves it through the coolers quicker. I am running about 15 quarts, 5 of which is still mobile one 5w50. Will be diluted even more when I change oil next week. Running 3 coolers 1 B&B in front, 44Row Mocal in wheel well (two 6 inch fans) and stock engine cooler.

Craig, just read your spec sheet. We have the same basic set-up. 3.4, K27, 7.5:1 compresson, 964 cams, B&B Headers. My heads were custom ported (will look up the cut tonight), I have a Koklen intercooler and Monty muffler - no cat

Using Shell Rotella "T" 15W-40 with excellent results in mine. I change my oil VERY frequently! Planning to try Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15W-40 on my next oil change, this weekend.
edit: ooops, I see you meant for the synthetic oil users to respond. Sorry!
