Wow ! I am one of those guys who is pissed at how much time I spent reading this thread....but it IS like a train wreck....I could not stop, and eventually read almost the whole thing. I read from the beginning then skipped to the end and then went back to the middle.

I don't have a comment on Pesto, but I did learn a lot. The biggest is a new appreciation for my 1973 RS clone. I love driving the car and have put an average of 10,000 miles a year on it in Southern California for the last 9 years. I love how it drives and this thread makes me appreciate the daily experience I am privileged to have driving it.

Ironically it is probably closer to a real RS than the subject of this thread! Dave at TRE had a lot do to with building this car, and has done major maintenance on it for me. I have done the rest including a cosmetic restoration. We used THE RS BOOK as a guide when we did this work and continue to use it as a guide.

I won't bore you with the details on the car or the specs but will if asked. Let me just say it is a very clean rust free 1973 RS clone that started with a 1973 911E with 1975 cases on a 2.7, MFI, and built by Black Forest in San Diego. Original factory burzel, RS suspension, bumpers etc..

It is a blast to drive and tremendously reliable. I have deviated from RS specs in things like modern seats, pointless ignition (Pertronix) and other minor practical points that make daily driving better.

In looking at this thread I realize that for me one of the great things about this 10 year experience and romance with this car has been the discovery process of learning about the history, the engineering, construction, how to fix it, and just plain appreciating it. Nothing replaces the thrill of digging in and getting your hands dirty. This site, Dave Bouzaglou at TRE, my friend and body man Steve Higginson and others have been a great help and great friends in this journey.

I feel sorry that Pesto has not been able to spend hours behind the wheel of his RS! I know a few Alpine roads I would love to drive in an old RS!!!

You're a very lucky man...I originally bought my RS not as a collector car but as a car I could build many memories with...thats why i do want it back...but im pissed it turned out to be rebodied...no big deal ultimately i never had intentions of not owning it..when you make a clone and enjoy it I think you really have the best of all worlds...good luck and id like to know about those alpine roads ...

This RS, is it the only 9116301316 in existence?

I think there are several rebodied cars out there. It that wrong? Most early restored cars are only 50% original sheet metal.

I also know that it exists several legit RS cars with the SAME chassie number.

For a slightly different run: Take the A1 south from Milan, leave it at Fiorenzuola (about 90 minutes from Como or 60 minutes from Sesto). Aim for Castelarquato and then Vernasca (That's the Silver Flag, classic Hill climb route) Stay on that road all the way to Chiavari/Sestre Levante via passo Pellizzone-passo delle 100 croci-passo del Bracco) Not the quickest route but almost always traffic free and classic 911 driving.

Im familiar with that route....Ive actually noted this thank you...next time im there for sure Im going to do it...Ive done a few rallies in that region...once not too far from there in Brescia I was pulled over i believe it was the a4 with my temporary German tags which were exactly ONE day expired....and I almost lost 1316. According to Italian law...an unregistered car becomes property of the italian government and will be auctioned off. I was livid...It took me almost 7 months to get the car back. A few close calls which i almost lost it but we managed to negotiate with the local govt to get the car before auction...like I said there are many memories with that car...not all good..

I used to keep my cars in Sesto San Giovani...one of the few red towns left in italy (communist) Its an industrial city but very interesting none the less. Verona was a bit east of Brescia and a great town...thats where I was on the way to when I was pulled over...

...memories...

I owned RS#1126 for 11 years from 1984 and its entire front clip had been replaced in Germany from a PO's wreck. All the way back to and including the lower half of the firewall. It had the correct Vin stamping on though.

Wonder where the old sheet metal bearing the original VIN ended up?

If Pesto's car had that done instead of a complete bodyshell swap?Hmm, what would have been the best Repair?

Is this Pestos old car? Was white, repainted red, rebodied, full 2.7RS engine rebuilt by Michael Ruah etc

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1107699.htm

Oh and sorry for bringing up a painful topic

Ouch!!!

Riddle: If a 911 is re-bodied (from a T), has a non numbers matching motor (case), wrong wheels, and later year rear suspension, sold (twice) through a dealer with a "distinguished" history, how much original "RS" is there? And how much is it worth?

And that's just after a quick refresh of Pesto's first post on this thread.

Great looking car though.

Yup...that's it...Paul Ripley AKA "auto legends" is the current owner if you read through this thread. Guess it was rebodied by with a new shell back in the 80s. Would like to hear the story behind that.
